This time let’s talk about the Arkansas River. The Ark is famous in Colorado for its incredible whitewater flows all summer long. But what makes Arkansas special is more than rapids.
“The Arkansas River is reminiscent of the clear, relatively warm waters of a semi-arid desert with warm temperatures creating the perfect rafting environment,” says Cole Bangert, owner and guide at Sage. “It’s completely unique in the West. The Ark Current is driven by reservoirs upstream, so the rafting is phenomenal all summer; Not just during the start of the snowmelt.”
Best Rivers To Raft In Colorado
Those with experience with White Creek Colorado or Eagle River rafting trips know that these are some of the Colorado rafting trips that rely heavily on the early snowmelt period.
Cole says his Arkansas background, with whitewater rafting trips in Browns Canyon or numbers tours, also makes him unique. The entire corridor is lined with peaks at over 14,000 feet, the highest concentration of the “14” in the state. With snow-capped peaks above and desert granite rocks below, the banks of the Arkansas River are lined with ponderosa pine and the scent of vanilla from its bark fills the air.
“The upper Arkansas River features great Class V rapids, some of the steepest commercial rapids in the US,” added Cole. “The Pine Creek section drops 200 feet per mile. This is one-mile Class V speed with tricky moves, fast water, big waves and big hydraulics that you have to manage with precision and power.”
Under Pine Creek is the popular “Numbers” section, where rafters will find some of the most enjoyable Class IV courses anywhere in Colorado. The many rapids on the Arkansas River are some of the most famous waters experienced rafters can enjoy in this extraordinary state.

Finally, just below the city of Buena Vista is the most popular stretch of the Arkansas River, Browns Canyon National Monument. This impressive gorge was designated a National Monument in 2015, and for good reason.
“Here you have the opportunity to swim through a stunning canyon,” concluded Cole. “It consists of ten miles of Class III rapids where groups and families can enjoy an extraordinary experience in this impressive natural setting.”
