Mount Everest was first conquered by Nepalese Sherpa Tenzing Norgay and New Zealand mountaineer Edmund Hillary in the year 1953. Everest is followed by Mount K2, located on the China-Pakistan border in the Gilgit region of northern Pakistan. At 8,611 meters above sea level, it is the second highest mountain in the world. K2 is called “Savage Mountain” because climbing it is an encounter with the experience of death. It is one of the deadliest mountains, as almost one person who tries to climb it loses their life every year. Kangchenjunga, located between Nepal and Sikkim in India, is the third highest mountain in the world at 8,586 meters. This mountain range consists of five peaks called “Five Treasures of Snow”. Mount Everest, at 8,850 meters (29,035 feet) above sea level, unquestionably claims the crown as the highest point in the world. However, the title of “tallest mountain in the world” when measured from base to summit belongs to Mauna Kea, which has an elevation of only 4,205 m (13,796 ft) above sea level.
The Grip: This is a dormant shield volcano on the island of Hawaii with its base about 6,000 meters (19,700 feet) below the surface of the Pacific Ocean. That is, more than half is submerged in water. All told, Mauna Kea is over 10,000 feet tall, higher than Mount Everest’s 8,850 feet, making it the tallest mountain in the world. It is also the highest volcano on Earth.
Mauna Kea is believed to have formed in a hot spot in the Earth’s crust, an area where magma rose from the mantle through the Earth’s crust and erupted to the surface. The hotspot is believed to have remained stationary as the Pacific Plate, on which Mauna Kea sits, has shifted. Mauna Kea is the youngest of these volcanoes, formed just a million years ago and is still an active volcano, although it has not erupted for many centuries. Scientists believe that Mauna Kea last erupted 45,000 years ago.
