Which Is The Highest Mountain In Europe – At 15,203 meters high, Monte Rosa is the highest point in Switzerland. Located in the Eastern Alpine system, it is a major tourist destination that attracts skiers, snowboarders and rock climbers. The Tour de Monte Rosa, a 10-day trekking tour popular with climbers, also takes place here.
The Dom is a mountain in the Pennine Alps with a summit of 14,911 feet. Although mountain glaciers exist, environmental changes related to climate change affect their appearance. As it lies outside the main Alpine chain, its east- and west-flowing rivers both empty into the Rhone.

Despite being one of the highest mountains in the Alps at 14,692 feet, the Matterhorn is best known for its iconic carved shape, which has become a well-known symbol of mountaineering. The first attempt to climb the Matterhorn proved a failure in 1865, when four climbers died from the fall. The highest of the four peaks of the Matterhorn was successfully climbed only in 1962. The Matterhorn has been excluded from the federal inventory of natural monuments since 1983.

The environmental impact has resulted in the melting of many mountain glacial formations, leading to an increased risk of landslides and a reduction in the supply of fresh drinking water. Other consequences of melting glaciers include drought, flooding, fragility of ecosystems and economic devastation from loss of tourism. When you think of the highest mountains in Europe, you probably think of Mont Blanc or maybe even the Matterhorn. While these two mountains are certainly impressive in their own right, they are not the highest in Europe – only one of them makes this list.
“Europe” is quite a broad term. So when we say “Europe” we mean the geographical continent of Europe. There is much debate as to which is the highest peak in Europe, as Mount Elbrus, number one on this list, is actually located on the border of Europe and Asia within the Caucasus Mountains. We have only included prominent peaks in this top 10. After much confusing research, it became clear that many of the other entries for Europe’s highest peaks contain satellite peaks.
We also did not include peaks like Mount Ararat in this top 10. Mount Ararat is located in the Asian region of transcontinental Turkey.
It has long been discussed where the Europe-Asia border passes through the Caucasus Mountains. Modern authorities now agree that Elbrus lies within the European part of the border. For this reason, Mont Blanc is the highest peak in Western Europe and Elbrus is the highest in the entire continent.

It should also be said that if you have the necessary mountaineering experience and plan to climb some of these peaks and stay, then you should first check the warnings from the British Foreign and Commonwealth Office (FCO). The FCO now advises against “as good as necessary” travel within Georgia, where many of the peaks in this top 10 are located.
Mount Ebrus is hotly contested as the number one highest mountain in Europe and has also earned a place in the prestigious Seven Summits collection (a list of the highest mountains on every continent). Mount Elbrus itself is part of the Caucasus mountain range, which stretches across southern Russia and forms the border between Georgia and Russia and the intersection of the European and Asian tectonic plates (hence the mountains).
Elbrus consists of two western (5642) and eastern (5621 m) peaks of the volcano. The smaller eastern peak was first climbed in 1829 by Khillar Khachirov. It was another 45 years before the highest western peak was climbed in 1874 by a British expedition led by Florence Crauford Grove.
If you want to climb Mount Elbrus, expect a duration of three to five days between June and September, spending the first few days acclimatising to the small peaks of the region. Although Mount Elbrus is one of the easiest of the Seven Peaks, all of Elbrus is made up of glaciers and therefore requires solid mountaineering technique (and/or a mountain guide) to reach the summit.
What’s The Highest Mountain In Europe?
Its name is derived from a Turkish word meaning “steep mountain”. Dykh-Tau is the second highest peak in Europe. Dykh-Tau is located in the Caucasus Mountains, just 5 km north of the border between Russia and Georgia.
As the second highest mountain in Europe, Dykh-Tau also takes its place in the second Seven Peaks. The Second Seven Summits is a list of the second highest mountains on every continent on earth—a mountain group that, according to author Jon Krakauer, is more difficult to climb than the Seven Summits. Dykh-Tau continues this trend as it is a more challenging climb than Elbrus and usually takes 10 days to climb in total.
Shkhara, the third on the list and the highest point in Georgia, is another technically challenging climb in the Caucasus. It forms the highest point of the Bezengi Wall, a heavily glaciated, almost vertical 12 km long mountain range that is a Mecca for experienced climbers from around the world.
It is the northeast ridge of Shkhara that was first climbed in 1888 by a British and Swiss trio of Almer, Cockin and Roth. The northeast ridge is a technical climb in itself, presenting significant challenges from the moment you emerge from the Bezeng Glacier. The ascent to the northeastern ridge is via the easiest route to the top of Mount Shkhara. Climbers are usually expected to spend two days on the route and spend the night bivouacing high on the ridge.
Of The Tallest Mountains In The World By Continent
Although the northeast ridge is a fairly technical climb, the entire 13km Bezeng Wall traverse is a climber’s crown jewel. This wall was first climbed in 1938 by a group of strong Russian climbers.
Along with Dychtau and Shkhara, Koshtan-Tau also faces the great Bezengi mountains. It’s another rock climber’s dream, with steep slopes on all sides. The first ascent was made by Woolley via the North Crest in 1889, a remarkable achievement given the simplicity of climbing equipment in those years. Even today, climbers flock to Koshtan-Tau to climb the historic ridges and peaks that provide the easiest access to the cliffs.
Mount Kazbek (also spelled “Kasbek”) is a 5,033-meter dormant stratovolcano on the border of Russia and Georgia. Due to the geographic location of the region, Mount Kazbek is often subject to tectonic activity, so small earthquakes are common in the region.
Due to tectonic and volcanic activity, the glaciers on the steep slopes of the Kazbek Mountains often collapse into large pieces, often resulting in the death of many people. This is not true, just like on August 20, 2014, when seven people tragically lost their lives after the collapse of the Devdaraki glacier.
Highest Peaks Of European Countries
Although it is claimed to be only the 10th highest mountain in the Caucasus, Tetnuld ranks as the 6th highest mountain in Europe, as it is a prominent independent peak and not a satellite peak.
Interestingly, on the northwest side of Tetnuld there is a peak. The Tetnuldi ski area consists of only four ski lifts that take you to an altitude of 3165 m. Although located in one of the most remote parts of Georgia, just 15 km from the town of Mestia, after its opening on February 8, 2016, the ski resort is one of the newest ski resorts in Europe.
The highest mountain in Western Europe and perhaps the most famous mountain in this top 10. The highest peak in the European Alps, spanning the seven Alpine countries of France, Switzerland, Italy, Liechtenstein, Austria, Germany and Slovenia.
The first ascent of Mont Blanc (Monte Bianco in Italian) is said to mark the beginning of modern mountaineering. The first ascent was made by hunter and crystal collector Jacques Balmat and physician Michel Paccard. The climb itself was actually led by Horace-Benedikt de Saussure, who offered a reward to any climber brave enough to attempt this unclimbed peak.
Eastern Europe Ranges
The ascent of Mont Blanc led to the so-called Golden Age of mountaineering, during which Europeans continued to climb many of the classic peaks in the Alps.
Like many mountains in this top 10, Mont Blanc marks the border between the two countries. This time the two countries are Italy and France, both fighting for rights to the summit, with the issue of ownership dating back to the French Revolution.

Dzhimara Mountain, also called Jimara, is located on the border between Russia and Georgia in the North Ossetia-Alania region. It is the second highest peak in the Khokh Mountains, the only peak of which is Mount Kazbek.
