Greenwood County in Tulsa was once one of the most affluent black communities in the United States. In the early 1900s it was even dubbed “Negro Wall Street” by Booker T. Washington. A hundred years have now passed since the massacre of the races in 1921, when a white mob attempted to destroy Tulsa’s Greenwood neighborhood in one of the worst home invasions in U.S. history. It is important to note that the story did not end there and the people of Greenwood rebuilt and continued to prosper. The entrepreneurial spirit still lives on with black-owned businesses on Greenwood Avenue, such as Silhouette Sneakers, Black Wall Street Tee & Souvenirs, Frio’s Gourmet Pops, and Wanda J’s Restaurant.

I recommend starting your day in Greenwood with a visit to the Greenwood Cultural Center where you will be given a full history of the great men and women who made Black Wall Street what it was. Follow that with a photo in front of the Black Wall Street mural just outside the cultural center. Next, head to Greenwood Rising (scheduled to open Summer 2021) for an interactive experience documenting race relations in the United States, the Tulsa Race Massacre and what followed.

You can’t visit Tulsa without trying homemade soul food. As mentioned before, Wanda J’s is the place to be when you’re on Greenwood Avenue. You can’t go wrong with any of the entrees (the catfish and meatloaf were our personal favorites), but be sure to try the sweet potato and mac and cheese! Greens are delicious, even if they’re not sold. Another notable soul food spot to add to your list is Sweet Lisa’s Cafe. More in the Greenwood area: Food Trucks in Guthrie Green.

The Philbrook Museum of Art should be high on your list of things to do in Tulsa, as it has great artwork and an equally impressive botanical garden! Housed in a beautiful old villa from the 1920s, the museum houses beautiful pieces from a wide variety of artists. They even have a clip of Hindy Wiley, the genius behind the official portrait of President Obama. Admission is $12 for adults, and I recommend going on a Friday when it’s open from 9am to 9pm. I loved exploring the museum’s offerings in the afternoon when it was warmest, then strolling through the garden just before sunset when the temperature cooled.

Mother Road Market, located off Route 66, is the place to be if you’re looking for variety! It is Oklahoma’s premier dining hall and features an eclectic array of fine dining and unique shops. Some stalls not to be missed are Big Dipper Creamery for ice cream made with local ingredients, Da Yolk for basic brunch and Umami Chips for the most loaded chips ever. I am always mesmerized when I think of their Gogi Beef Fries! Please note that the restaurant is closed on Mondays. Check out www.motherroadmarket.store for merchandise.

If you’re traveling with kids, Gathering Place should definitely be on your list of things to do in Tulsa! Even if you don’t have young children, this is the perfect place for children of all ages and sports enthusiasts. The Gathering Place is a riverside park that offers a variety of attractions from a skate park (great people watching!) to basketball courts. Best of all, there are no entrance fees. Did I mention it was also voted the best urban park in the United States?
