I have a secret love affair with the sea, so whenever I visit a beach town, it’s at the top of my must-see list. If you love the ocean too, you’ll be delighted that Jacksonville Beach is less than half an hour from downtown Jacksonville on Florida’s east coast and stretches for over 4 miles. Parking is free and you can always find a place. The beach itself is also never too crowded. It’s about a 400 meter walk from the beach but it will cost you a dollar if you want to walk the distance and enjoy the view. Alternatively, you can enjoy the beauty and take photos from afar.

Jacksonville Beach is a popular spot for swimming and I was content just to sit on the sand and watch the locals surf the waves. The curves of the beach, framed by the skyscrapers looming in the background, also make for fantastic photos. So don’t forget to bring your camera.

Jax Beach is bordered by Neptune and Atlantic Beaches to the north and Ponte Vedra Beaches to the south, so you can easily spend the day walking or driving along the beach. We never intended to explore them all, but after hopping in the car “just to go a few streets” we were in awe of all the views, beaches and even beautiful seaside houses we couldn’t stop and what followed. We knew we had accidentally gone 20 miles south to St. Augustine, where we ate at one of the most beautiful beach restaurants I have ever visited in my life. mother
When the Friendship Fountain opened in 1965, it was the largest and tallest fountain in the world, pumping 17,000 gallons of water per minute to a height of more than 100 feet. Today it no longer bears that name, but it is still one of the most famous places in Jacksonville. The west end of the Southbank Riverwalk can be found at Friendship Park in downtown Jacksonville (St. Johns River Park).
The Southbank Riverwalk offers views of St. Johns and it’s a lovely place to walk day or night. Being a pedestrian only street, you don’t have to worry about traffic or looking both ways as you stroll leisurely along the river and admire the skyscrapers and city lights that dominate the skyline. . Benches and gazebos line the river bank and provide a peaceful place to rest and relax.
This market is unique because it is located right on the St. Johns and hosts year-round entertainment. Every now and then you are sure to see many boats moored on the water and their owners join the bustling crowd to take part in the local festivities. Jacksonville Landing features free concerts, special fireworks displays, shopping, beachside restaurants and even nightclubs. While shopping obviously involves money, it doesn’t cost you anything to visit the area, meet the locals and soak up the atmosphere. So I highly recommend adding this stop to your list of free things to do in Jacksonville. . It’s worth seeing at least once!
Fun Things To Do In Jacksonville, Fl When It’s Raining
One of Jacksonville’s most famous landmarks, the Dames Point Bridge is 10,646 feet long, with the longest section reaching 1,300 feet and spanning 175 feet. It is also the longest concrete bridge in the United States. A drive to Dames Point is a must for anyone visiting Jacksonville for the first time, and you can’t beat the scenery the short drive offers.
Not only is this beautiful tree 250 years old, but it may be the oldest living creature in Jacksonville, predating the founding of the city in the 1820s. Its outstretched limbs resemble an octopus more than a tree, and walking under it is like entering a magical world or a child’s castle sealed off from the rest of the world. Contract Oak can be found at Jesse Ball DuPont Park on Prudential Drive in Southbank. If you’re a nature lover, don’t miss this free attraction in Jacksonville.

Hemming Park is the oldest public park in Jacksonville. There are concerts, art and cultural events, but my favorite attraction is the MOSH Mouth. The unforgettable 18.5-meter artificial head was once owned by the Museum of Science and Physics, but in 2016 it was moved to the children’s zone in Hemming Park, where it became a permanent installation. Of all the free things to do in Jacksonville, this is definitely the most interesting item on our list. And that’s exactly why you should stop. You won’t find anything like this anywhere else!
Things To Do In Jacksonville Beach This Weekend

The weekly Riverside Art Market is held at the Fuller Warren Bridge on the St. Johns every Saturday from 10am to 3pm, rain or shine. Popular attractions include local artists, farmers, bakers, live entertainment, crafts and even street performers.

You can spend a whole day photographing all the street art in Jacksonville. Downtown is an Instagramable place and the level of detail in some of the artwork is truly amazing. This mural in front of MOSH (Museum of Science and History) is one of my favorite paintings, but there are dozens of other amazing murals around town.

The Cummer Museum of Art and Gardens offers free admission every Tuesday from 4:00 PM to 9:00 PM and the first Saturday of the month from 10:00 AM to 4:00 PM. Every Tuesday to Friday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., even students with an ID have free entry. If you are a military family member, you can enjoy the parks for free anytime from Memorial Day through Labor Day. The museum displays art from 2100 BC. to the 21st century, and its grounds include 2.5 acres of historic 20th-century architecture with ponds, groves, fountains and sculptures. It is by far one of my favorite free places in Jacksonville, Florida.
The Jacksonville Skyway, or JTA Skyway, takes passengers to the city’s most popular attractions as it stretches across St. Johns and the city’s busiest streets on the two and a half mile stretch between Northbank and Southbank. Automated trains arrive every 4 minutes during peak hours and provide easy access to food, entertainment and hotels. It’s comprehensive, so you can use the service for all your city center transportation needs without paying a single cent.
Get free admission to the Museum of Science and History, also known as the MOSH Museum, every first weekend of the month when you present a Bank of America or Merrill Lynch debit or credit card.

Sally, which makes black rides and animatronics, offers hour-long tours to the public on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 9:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. (except July and August). Advance booking is required and children must be at least 7 years old to participate. But it’s all free fun!

This free attraction features a beautiful lake with a replica of Jacksonville’s beautiful bridges dividing it down the middle. Inspirational plaques, artwork and an interactive computer featuring the names of local cancer survivors are the focal point of the park and their combined message of hope, encouragement and celebration is truly inspiring.
The Jacksonville Arboretum and Gardens is a 120-acre urban forest with more than 3 miles of rustic trails that meander around a lake, valley, and through a variety of habitats. If you’re a nature lover, the free attractions in Jacksonville are for you!
The Timucuan Ecological and Historic Reserve, one of the last intact coastal wetlands on the Atlantic coast, represents more than 6,000 years of human history. It is also home to Kingley Plantation and Fort Caroline National Memorial. Both are free!
Explore a replica fort built by early European settlers and discover artifacts from the Timucuan Indian era.
Best Of The Beach On A Budget In Jacksonville, Florida
Downtown Jacksonville hosts a free art show on the first Wednesday of every month. The festival features live music, magic shows, crafts and other performances.
The second Tuesday of the month is free at Jax Beach from 5:00 PM to 9:00 PM
