Deciding what to pack for a trip to Norway, especially Northern Norway, can be difficult. Having lived in Tromsø for most of my life, I know how quickly the weather can change in the Arctic. In a matter of minutes, the sun can turn to snow, the wind conditions can be crazy, and the temperature can drop 5-10 degrees in an instant.

Northern Norway is a popular destination for hiking and outdoor activities. Most people who come to Tromsø and the Lofoten Islands want to be outside and see the Northern Lights, hiking in the mountains, taking a fjord cruise or going dog sledding. Even if the weather is sunny and warm, you should always be prepared for a change in weather when you embark on an outdoor adventure.
So in this article, I’ve put together two lists for Northern Norway, one for winter and one for summer, with clothes, boots and gear to prepare you for anything Norway has to offer.
Packing for the Arctic requires different clothing and footwear than a trip to a south central European city. It can be cold here even in summer!

Below is my packing list for women and men, winter and summer, including shoes, gear, and gadgets you should bring to Northern Norway. I hope this makes your trip to Northern Norway a little easier! ♥
In the Norwegian Arctic, winter usually starts in October, when temperatures drop below freezing, and lasts until May.
The coldest months in Norway are January and February. The average temperature in Tromsø during these months is -3.5 °C (25.7 °F), similar to Oslo, although Tromso is further north. This is thanks to the Gulf Stream, which brings warm ocean currents to the north and maintains a livable temperature here. However, it can get quite cold and the lowest temperature recorded in Tromsø is -18.4 °C (-1.1 °F).
However, if you drive inland, it can be very cold, with temperatures often dipping below -30°C.
Days In Norway Itinerary For The First Time Visitors
If you go on organized hikes, you will usually be provided with thermal suits and shoes. But check before you book your trips. In addition, you must wear wool underwear, wool lining, wool socks, wool gloves, and a hat under your thermal suit.
However, if you plan to explore on your own, or just visit cities like Tromsø, warm clothing is essential. You don’t need a full thermal suit, but bring warm clothes and a windbreaker.
Make sure you check the weather before you go to Northern Norway and especially every morning before you set off on your adventure. Norwegians pay special attention to the weather. In fact, we talk when we make small talk. 🙂 There is a reason why the most used weather app in Norway is year.no.
Below is my complete list for a trip to Northern Norway. It is divided into two parts, a winter packing list and a summer packing list.

To observe the Northern Lights on an autumn day in Tromsø, wear a woolen sweater, windproof pants and a woolen hat.
My best advice is to dress in layers; so you can easily remove or add layers as the weather changes throughout the day. It is also the hottest way to dress.
You may notice a recurring theme in this packing list, and that is wool and wool. 🙂 To stay warm in Norway, you need woolen clothes and down.
In winter, the base layer is the most important because it is the main layer of insulation that keeps you warm.

Your base layer should be made of wool because wool is antimicrobial, moisture wicking, odor resistant, and keeps you warm even when wet. I personally prefer merino wool because it doesn’t itch, but all wool does.

I have to admit that I am a fan of wool sweaters. I can’t get enough of them 🙂 But for good reason, they are very practical for Northern Norway. They work well as an outer layer on a cool summer afternoon or an autumn day, and in winter you can wear them under your winter jacket.
Woolen sweaters are very warm and I wear them almost every day, especially during winter. You can find wool sweaters in all types of wool, thick or thin, and they look very stylish too.
What To Pack And To Wear When Travelling To Northern Norway
A wool jacket or sweater is an alternative. But remember that most wool clothing is 100% polyester (the same material used to make plastic bottles). So when the wool gets wet, it loses its warmth and no longer keeps you warm.
However, there are woolens on the market that have added wool to the fabric, which is a better alternative for a trip to Northern Norway. So check what the wool is made of before you buy and pack it.
I also recommend bringing a warm hat/bonnet and a pair of warm gloves or mittens, preferably windproof and waterproof. My favorite are the mittens because they are warmer than the mittens.
It is worth packing a scarf or scarves made of wool, cashmere or angora.
Dos And Don’ts Of Visiting Tromso, Norway
In winter, I change my jacket depending on the weather and the activities I have planned. And I always bring my jacket in my pack, which is great to add under a gore-tex jacket for that extra layer.
If you plan on hiking, skiing, and other hot, sweaty activities, I recommend bringing a jacket that can be easily slipped on and off. It must be wind and waterproof, so a Gore-Tex cover is ideal. Windbreaker pants are essential for hiking in the mountains during winter.
However, if you are primarily looking for hiking, sightseeing, and seeing the northern lights, a warm jacket is the best option.
A good pair of winter boots is a must in the winter season. Your feet can easily get cold when out on ice and snow, so wearing good boots is probably the most important thing. The shoes should be warm and waterproof, as in winter there are days with wet weather (common in January / February in Tromsø).

Shoelaces are also a useful packing item (although you can buy them in all sporting goods stores in Norway). They prevent slipping on the icy streets that we usually have in winter. You can take the types described below in stores, museums, etc. Very easy to put on and take off for sightseeing. They are not suitable for riding in the mountains, but they are perfect for riding in the city.

These months, however, are still very cool, with significant changes from year to year. For example, the average temperature in Tromsø in July is 12.4 °C (54.3 °F). However, in July 1972, Tromsø recorded a maximum of 30.2 °C (86.4 °F). So it has changed a lot!
Northern Norway can be cold in summer. So if you leave your heavier winter jackets and boots at home, you’ll find that your packing list for summer isn’t all that different from winter.
What To Pack For Northern Norway
Underwear, bras, wool and microfiber tights, long underwear/high-waisted shirts, long-sleeved shirts, short-sleeved shirts, tank tops, bikinis/swimwear
A middle layer should be added on top of the base layer (or stored in your pack for later use). The middle layer should consist of a fleece pullover, fleece pullover, and/or a thin, lightweight jacket. In case of bad weather, your backpack should also include a scarf/scarf, hat and gloves.
You should also bring a waterproof and windproof jacket.
