Winter makes Colorado the most popular winter sports state in America. The Rocky Mountains offer incredible and extensive winter sports options to satisfy all types of skiers, snowboarders and winter sports enthusiasts.
Even if you’re not at all a fan of winter sports, there are still plenty of things to do in Colorado in the winter that make visiting the state a great winter vacation.
During the winter season, the weather in Colorado can vary from sunny and beautiful days with slightly “milder” temperatures to freezing cold days when, for example, a snow storm rolls in. So if you visit Colorado in the winter, you need to prepare for both the weather and a possible snowstorm.

When you visit the Colorado Rockies in the winter, it’s usually pretty cold and snowy. When visiting in winter, we recommend packing enough warm snow-suitable clothing for Colorado.
It’s always best to start with multiple layers that you can take off later if it gets too hot. We recommend wearing very warm winter coats and winter boots suitable for snow.
For all outdoor winter activities in Colorado, we recommend wearing thermal ski clothing as a first layer to keep you warm even when you’re not skiing. Wearing warm and thick woolen socks will make your feet beautiful and comfortable.
When it gets really cold, we usually wear a light fluffy jacket under our winter coat or ski jacket as an extra layer to protect us from the cold.

We always carry a warm drink with us, whether on the slopes or on snowshoes and the like. It’s the perfect way to stay warm and hydrated.
There is usually not much snow in November and only a few ski resorts are open. Those that are open have only a few lifts and rely on snowmaking.
It doesn’t snow much, but it can get really cold. However, the weather in November can be surprisingly mild. This month is quite difficult to plan as the temperatures during November can be quite extreme on both ends of the thermometer.
During the months we usually wear insulated jackets with layers underneath. Therefore, our recommendation would be a lighter winter jacket or puffer jacket and more layers to adjust.

Just like in November, the weather in Colorado starts to change again in March. Winter is slowly turning into spring.
March is spring skiing month and one of the busiest months in Colorado! There is still enough good snow, in fact even in March it can snow a lot. However, the climate is starting to move slightly away from the low winter temperatures again. You’ll have sunny days with blue skies, making March one of our favorite months to ski in Colorado.
When it comes to what to wear skiing in Colorado in March, we recommend a light ski jacket with layers underneath for a nice sunny day. Using sunscreen is key in March!
Always check the weather forecast before going to the mountains, as March can also be quite an extreme month. Like November, March is a shoulder month and anything is possible! There have been years when Colorado experienced the highest snowfall totals in March.

Breckenridge Ski Resort has the highest lift in North America and Breckenridge is generally skied at a higher elevation than other ski resorts.
The basic rule is that the higher the altitude, the lower the temperatures. That’s why we recommend you layer up properly on cold winter days when skiing in Breckenridge.
