It’s impossible to drive directly to the highest point in Rocky Mountain National Park, but you can drive very quickly. Trail Ridge Road climbs above the tree line and offers great views.

This mountainous section of Trail Ridge Road is not the highest driveable road in Colorado. Scroll to the end of this article to find out which roads are the highest. However, it is the highest road in the park. Being at 12,000 feet is still very high.
To be precise, the highest elevation on Trail Ridge Road (US Route 34) is 12,183 feet. From October to the end of May, the road is closed due to winter and snowy roads.
The whole time I was there I didn’t experience any “fast weather” except for strong winds. Luckily my Scottvest kept me very warm.

Eleven miles of road are well above the tree line. When you reach that height, all you see is bare land and mountains.
The best spot there is Forest Canyon, which overlooks snow-capped mountains, green forests and rocky hills.
One of the most interesting things about Forest Canyon was the presence of marmots roaming the rocks. This guy met me right in the parking lot. He didn’t even blink when I pulled the curb a few feet away.
Marmots are not hard to find. Take a close look at all the rock piles. And listen to the regular meeting.
Climb The Canadian Rockies’ 11,000 Foot Peaks
Forest Canyon Overlook is a great place to take “top of the world” photos. If I hadn’t flown alone I’d take a few of my own (a dozen) on the wing.
For those of us who don’t live at such an altitude, seeing it snow in the summer is overwhelming. This family engaged in an essential snowball fight. I’m sure they’re in “not guilty” territory, but can you blame them?
On the long drive back to my camp, I passed a few moose roaming the mountain. I like deer more than deer. It’s because you won’t run away even if you stop a car in front of you. Instead, they get up and pretend to be supermodels. make it work!
Apparently, Forest Canyon Overlook has an official elevation of 11,712 feet, but you can keep driving higher and reach 12,000 feet. Or take a short hike on one of the mountain trails. Do not push yourself too far or too fast to avoid altitude sickness!

The highest peak in Rocky Mountain National Park is Longs Peak at 14,259 feet above sea level. But you can’t drive anywhere near that apex.
Reaching Longs Peak requires a 14.8-mile round trip involving an elevation gain of over 5,000 feet. Obviously, this trip is best done in the summer when there is less snow. If traveling at a moderate pace, expect 9-10 hours.
As mentioned earlier, Forest Canyon Overlook is not the highest point in Colorado accessible by car. In fact, even in the top 20!
The gap belongs to Mount Evans, a 14,264-foot peak, and there is a road to drive to the summit. It is the highest drivable road in the United States and the highest paved road in North America! Mount Evans is not in Rocky Mountain National Park, but it is 60 miles (90 minutes) from downtown Denver.

Later I attempted to climb Deer Mountain, a 10,000-foot peak with an easy summit route. Or so I thought. After following the road for a while, when I thought I had reached the top, the road started to go around the back of the mountain and go down. I was very confused.

Elen Planina’s problem is nowhere! When the trail gets to the point where it needs to break, you’d think there’d be an arrow pointing up. But nothing. You’re failing, Rocky Mountain National Park rangers. Like when they can’t tell you where to see the big sheep.
There were caves and caves created by huge rocks, so I was a little worried while hiking. Puma could easily live there.
Tallest Mountains In Canada
I have a slight fear of bears. But I’m afraid of pumas. There is no cure that kills cougars. Sometimes pumas attack people rather than flee. And I remember very well the episode “Niliokoka” which documented a puma attacking an elderly couple in this park. Fortunately, this trip was free for me.
So we never reached the highest point in Rocky Mountain National Park. But getting to 10,000 feet and driving to 12,000 feet was still pretty cool. It’s an experience you won’t find in many parts of the world!
