Things To Do In Keystone Colorado In Summer

Things To Do In Keystone Colorado In Summer – One of our favorite vacation spots to take our kids over the years is Keystone, Colorado. We want to go to Keystone in the summer, even though we have been there several times in the winter (but after my husband tore his ACL skiing last February, we probably won’t be back for some skiing). Summer is truly magical in Colorado… and it’s the perfect place to relax and beat the 100 degree heat we often face at home.

Going to Keystone is a wonderful adventure for the whole family. The perfect mix of adventure and tranquility. Keystone is far from Summit County’s most popular tourist destinations like Breckenridge and Vail, but there’s still plenty to do, even if you’re willing to drive a bit.

We usually spend a full week when we go to Keystone in the summer. Every day we plan one or two activities from the list below, then spend the rest of the time walking and relaxing by the river.

River Run & Outpost Gondolas

We love the rentals in the Starfire section of Keystone Resort. Each apartment we live in has a full kitchen and several bedrooms, so there is plenty of space, and we can only eat one meal a day. We also loved the proximity of Starfire Condo to our favorite private train. Wild Irishman and Soda Springs will be also good places for condos that are maybe a little cheaper. The town of Dillon, Colorado is literally 7 minutes away and has many hotel options there too!

Here are some of our favorite things to do in Keystone: :: Go on nature walks and hikes.

There is a large and private road along the river just steps from the condo we want to stay at. It’s a dirt road and one of our favorite places to walk, stop to throw rocks into the river and make boats out of bark. The River Run area also has a trail that goes behind the gondola and around the mountain side, which is great for nature walks.

We love Alpine Slides (here for proof)! And Breckenridge has the BEST alpine slides and TONS more for kids and adults at Breckenridge Adventure Discovery. From zip lines to bungee trampolines to roller coasters to tubing, you can have a whole day of fun at Breckenridge Mountain. And Breckenridge is only a 20 minute drive from Keystone!

Vail In Summer: 25 Best Things To Do (off Season) In Co

This is especially fun when the boys are young and in the “train stage”. The Georgetown Loop Railroad is historic and iconic. It’s worth getting on the train to see (and cross) the Devil’s Gate High Bridge, the iconic bridge in the Rockies.

You can also make my journey halfway through the train journey. The trip takes about an hour (average 2 1/2 hours by train). Please note, however, that children under the age of 5 cannot participate in my tour. Since we have kids under 5, we haven’t done my trip yet!

We went whitewater rafting a few years ago when our boys were 3 and 5 (it’s more white water rafting than white water rafting – our three year old fell asleep)! To be fair, Keystone is not the best place for rafting…the closest place is about a 1.5 hour drive. But it makes for a great fun day trip if you don’t go to the mountains often. We traveled to Buena Vista which is a beautiful and scenic 1.5 hour drive (one way). You can sign up for rafting at Keystone Resort or even Breckenridge that will pick you up, but we know our kids will be more comfortable in our own car (with a DVD player) than on a bus with other passengers. There are many companies that provide whitewater rafting, but we chose The Adventure Company and had a pleasant experience! We want to go back and do more adventurous rafting now that our kids are older!

The view from the top of Keystone Mountain is amazing. There is also a restaurant upstairs where you can eat (beware: prices are high). We took picnic lunches to the top, enjoyed the view and walked. If you go early enough, you can still use the remaining snow to climb the mountain! This is usually closed in mid-July, but we got lucky on the last day of the year!

Your Unforgettable Summer Adventure Awaits At Keystone Resort

There is a parking lot on Swan Mountain (between Keystone and Breckenridge) where you can follow a trail to a wonderful view. Bring some sunflower seeds and there will be plenty of friendly squirrels waiting for you to snack on. This simple activity has become one of the kids’ favorite things to do!

**Safety Note**: Many people warn against feeding squirrels because they can spread. Based on my limited research, it appears to be a threat at lower elevations where fleas and ticks can affect squirrels. If you choose to do so, do so at your own risk.

Lake Dillon (aka Dillon Reservoir) is truly amazing. It is one of the most beautiful places in Summit County. There is a walking/biking trail around the lake, and you can even rent boats! We wanted to picnic in Dillon overlooking the lake.

As mentioned before, the town of Dillon (off 1-70) is only 7 minutes from Keystone. They have a wonderful farmer’s market every Saturday morning during the summer! Not only tons of products and handmade items from various artists, but always live music and some fun activities for the kids! We enjoy this great hamster wheel!

Snow Tubing At Adventure Point (keystone)

Across the interstate from the town of Dillon is the town of Silverthorne (I don’t know why two towns that are right next to each other have separate names, but that’s neither here nor there). After the Silverthorne Recreation Center is the most amazing park we have been to (except maybe the one next to the Space Needle in Seattle). This park is huge and has a skate park next to it.

We always save the Keystone Stables Dinner Wagon Ride for our last night in Colorado because it’s one of our favorite things to do! You leave Keystone Resort by bus and take a 15-minute drive into the mountains, as far as the paved road takes you. Then, you go out and get into a horse-drawn carriage (or horse-drawn sleigh in the winter) that takes you to a place where cars are not allowed. The views in Soda Ridge Valley are absolutely stunning and the history of the house is neat! After a delicious dinner, you can enjoy camp songs around the fire, go horseback riding and explore! It really feels like you’re in another time!

Writing this post and looking at our photos over the years makes me want to go back! We have been to many wonderful places as a family, but Keystone will always be one of our favorites!!!
