It’s only a twenty minute drive from Denver, but feels like a world away – so it’s no wonder it’s such a popular day trip destination. Golden deserves its popularity and I always recommend people add Golden to their Denver itinerary. – This is one of the best neighborhoods in the Denver area.

Hiking is one of my favorite things to do in Golden, and there are many different hikes to choose from, ranging from a flat and easy meander near Clear Creek, to more challenging but rewarding hikes in some nearby mountains.

If you do one thing in Golden, make sure it’s a hike, because it’s the best way to experience the area’s natural beauty. Enjoy wildflowers everywhere in spring and early summer, and fall brings beautiful golden trees.

Best Things To Do In Golden, Co (for 2023)

Golden may have a relatively small downtown core, but there are a surprising number of great shops that you should definitely check out, including gift shops, antiques, boutiques, consignment shops, outdoor goods, and more.

My favorites are Marigram cards and gifts – I love their stickers, Blue Moose Trading Company and Rockin Horse antiques and collectibles – you can happily get lost in this treasure trove for hours.

Golden’s most famous brewery is Coors but it’s definitely not the same and it’s definitely not the best. For a small place, Golden is home to a lot of breweries, so if you like beer, you should definitely visit at least a few of them.

Besides offering great quality beer, another great thing about Golden breweries is that most of them are within walking distance of each other, so if you’re in or near downtown Golden, you don’t have to worry about drink. and driving.

My absolute favorite is New Terrain Brewing Company, which is a bit out of town, but well worth it. I recommend riding one of their flights to their sunny beer garden first and maybe dining at one of the two rotating food trucks, then head back downtown for more.

The best breweries in downtown Golden are Mountain Toad Brewing and Golden City Brewery, and I also like Barrels and Bottles Brewery and Cannonball Creek Brewing Company. Eddie’s Taproom and Hotel is also a great venue with city views and a great beer and cocktail menu.

Traveling between breweries on a sunny day with friends is one of the best things to do in Golden CO!

As well as breweries, Golden is home to some fantastic restaurants – even more so in the last couple of years with the opening of the Tributary Food Hall and The Golden Mill – the riverside food hall with the best rooftop terrace in town. and mountain view.

Hour Travel Guide Around Golden, Colorado

Sassafras – This Cajun restaurant serves the best brunch in town. Sit on the riverside patio and be sure to grab a side of beignets and one of their excellent mimosas or shots.

Sherpa House – Tibetan Restaurant and Cultural Center is very cozy inside and has a very affordable lunch buffet and a la carte menu with Nepali, Tibetan and Indian options.

Woody’s Wood Fired Pizza – Another great budget buffet option with decent pizza and amazing beer cheese soup. It is a popular destination for families.

Bob’s Atomic Burgers – Basic but well-made burgers in retro digs just outside the city – I especially love the fried chicken burger.

North Table Mountain

One of the most adventurous things to do in Golden is tubing in Clear Creek. There are a lot of rapids in the section that goes through town, but nothing too scary – well, just the right amount of scary.

You can take your own subway or rent one or buy one in the city. The best time to go tubing on the Golden is mid to late summer – spring and early summer have dangerously high water levels and the river is usually closed to tubing during this time.

If tubing is too crazy for you, maybe swim in the river. There are many spots where you can swim without getting caught in the rapids.

Relax and dry off on the rocks or have a picnic at Lions Park or River Parfet Park.

Golden is home to several museums and if you are interested in learning more about the history of the area, you should definitely visit one of them. Here are the top museums to visit:

Golden History Museum – This museum in the visitor center is free and, although small, is worth a visit to learn more about the history of the city of Golden.

Colorado Railroad Museum – I’ve never been to a railroad museum, but it’s on my bucket list. This 15-acre yard houses more than 100 locomotives, caboose and coaches, and trains run year-round behind a vintage locomotive.

American Mountaineering Museum – My favorite museum in Golden because I have a bit of an obsession with mountaineering. Last time I went there was a great film of Tommy Caldwell (The Dawn Wall) and Alex Honnold (Free Solo) climbing Patagonia’s Fitz Traverse.

Buffalo Bill Museum – Even if you don’t have much interest in Buffalo Bill Cody or know much about his life, I think this museum on Lookout Mountain is worth a visit. It chronicles the life of Buffalo Bill and his famous show in the Wild West, with lots of information and artifacts on display, as well as a film playing on loop.

While visiting the Buffalo Bill Museum, don’t miss a visit to Buffalo Bill’s burial site and the Boettcher Mansion – atop Lookout Mountain and connected by short hiking trails.

Buffalo Bill’s grave is strange enough to look at, but there was much fanfare and controversy when Buffalo Bill Cody was buried on Lookout Mountain in 1917.

The famous showman lived for a long time in Wyoming, and the town of Kandy, Wyoming, was named after him because he was one of the founders.

There was a lot of fuss from Cody about Buffalo Bill being buried in Colorado and the grave had to be encased in concrete to prevent it from being stolen by body grabbers from Wyoming.

The Boettcher Mansion is a beautiful example of the Arts & Crafts style built in 1917 and was the summer home and hunting lodge of Colorado businessman Charles Boettcher.

You can take a tour of the mansion or enjoy the beautiful mountain views from the gardens for free.

For a real adventure, climb Lookout Mountain from town. This is one of the more challenging hikes in Golden, but it’s gorgeous and well worth it if you’re relatively fit and have the time to hike it.

Golden Hills Rd, Golden, Co 80401

If you’re a fan of scenic drives, don’t miss the Lariat Loop, which starts in Golden and connects it to Lookout Mountain, Morrison and Evergreen – two beautiful mountain towns near Denver.

You can easily spend a day driving the Lariat Loop to see the quaint mountain towns, all the sights of Lookout Mountain, and many scenic viewpoints along the way.
