Hailed by many as one of the best routes in the country, this Colorado ride is highlighted by 6,000 feet of elevation gain in just 35 miles. Stunning Rocky Mountain scenery combined with windy and technical trails on the continental divide.
The trip usually begins with a shuttle to the top of Monarch Pass on US Highway 50. After reaching the 11,312-foot summit, it climbs and descends south on the hill. There are a few concessions, but classics include Marshall Pass to Silver Creek on the Rainbow Trail.

Mountain Biking In Salida
Shorter options include the technical and faster Foose and Green’s Creek trails along the Continental Divide to Salida. Another option is the Agate Creek Trail, a rock trail that runs down the Agate Creek drainage on the west side of Monarch Pass near Sargents. This is a great option along the 10 mile gravel road to Old Monarch Pass. Traffic kills traffic. If you haven’t completed Monarch Crest yet. Start there. This is a timer. This trip is expected to take 4-6 hours. Much higher than you get, but the ride is challenging and the air is light.
Located east of downtown Salida, across the river, S-Mountain (also known as the Arkansas Hills Trail System) provides easy trail access. This ever-expanding network offers a wide variety of trails from buff bench cut tracks to technical rocky singletrack. Whichever one you choose, the view from S-hill is stunning. Lush vegetation along the Arkansas River and the snow-capped Collegiate Peaks tower over the valley.
This planned loop system offers an epic choose-your-own adventure travel experience. Would you like to participate? Methodist Mountain, southeast of Salida, provides access to the trail near town. This BLM land is the focus of an ongoing development project, including a proposed flow trail that will add diversity to Salida’s trail catalog.
Riders of all skill levels will enjoy the trails here, but they are more for beginners and intermediates. Little Rainbow Double Rainbow and Racetrack offer fun singletrack through scrubby sagebrush and oaks. See the Methodist Mountain Trail Map for more information.
Like any city on two wheels, Salida has bike shops in grocery stores.
