Pearl Street is believed to be named after the wife of one of Boulder’s 54 founders. The original road was dirt (like most at the time) which caused unfavorable conditions in summer and winter. To combat muddy or dusty conditions, store owners built their sidewalks to make it easier for customers to enter the stores.
Eventually, the cobblestone pavement was replaced with temporary wooden sidewalks, and the street was the first in the city to be paved. In 1970, construction began on more than 35 street blocks to create a shopping center.
Four years later, 4 blocks have been designated pedestrian only and many of the buildings in the area have been restored. In 1976, the Pearl Street Mall officially opened after years of planning, construction and preservation of historic architecture along the avenue.
Today, the street is the cultural heart of the Boulder County city, providing a space for the community to eat, play and shop. Although it has taken many different forms over the years, its historic designations ensure that it will retain its charm and accessibility for the foreseeable future.

The Pearl Street pedestrian zone runs between 11th and 15th streets. If you’re coming into town through Denver, take Route 36 north on Route 1-25 directly into Boulder, where it turns onto 28th Street. Continue along this road and it will intersect Pearl Street with a shopping center on the left.
