Many adults may head to Kansas City for its famous barbecue restaurants and jazz clubs, but Kansas City also has plenty of fun things to do for kids. The self-proclaimed Fountain Town (there are more than 200 of them throughout the metropolitan area) is the perfect Midwestern road trip. Home of the Kansas City Royals, Spanish-themed outdoor shopping and a thriving arts scene. Visitors will be happy to know that Kansas City has many fun activities for kids.

Located in the Crown Center, the Hallmark Family Art Center operates Kaleidoscope, which encourages families to explore their creativity. This place is full of craft projects, strange creatures and exhibits, and best of all, it’s free!
Kids will love creating their own puzzles, drawing, finding light in a dark room, and using their imaginations! Next door is the Hallmark Visitor Center (also free) which showcases Hallmark history with exhibits including memorabilia jewelry, a collection of Hallmark art, and perhaps your kids’ favorite bow making machine!

, this place is a child’s dream. They had the opportunity to shoot hoops on a full-size court, play time-limited skill games, dunk and play basketball arcade games.
There is a Hall of Famers section, but most kids won’t be interested. I’m a college basketball fan, and I will say I was a little disappointed that it wasn’t the expected college basketball history museum, no real artifacts, etc. (Just my opinion).
Of course, most kids aren’t looking for a history lesson and will happily spend a few hours here, so pack your comfy shoes and join the fun!

Our family loves the Science Center and Science City at Union Station has tons of activities for kids to explore. Kids can enjoy Sky Bike, Dinosaur Dig Site and Mr. Ini Hotel of Illusion. Plan to spend a few hours here and let the kids really enjoy this interactive museum.
Located near Overland Park, Deanna Rose Children’s Farmstead was designed to represent a typical farmstead from the early 1900s. Open seasonally (April-October), the farm has more than 200 animals, a one-room schoolhouse, gardens, horse-drawn carriages, a dairy and more.
Kids can try their hand at fishing in the lake or feeding the goats, whatever your family needs. So plan a day or go for a few hours and see what life is like on a farm!
The Negro Leagues Baseball Museum, located in the 18th and Vine Museum complex (along with the American Jazz Museum), showcases the history of African-American baseball. Even if you’re not a baseball fan, you’ll appreciate the stories of the players, their struggles, and their successes on and off the field.
New Roller Coaster
Hopefully school-age children will appreciate and understand the struggles these players face as they try to find acceptance in a world that doesn’t accept them because of their race. The exhibits are educational and the artifacts tell stories. I highly recommend it for kids ages 8 and up (because there is so much to read).
Located at the Federal Reserve Bank of Kansas City’s Currency Museum, kids can learn about currency in a really fun way! This interactive museum features a huge vault filled with millions of dollars, a collection of President Truman’s coins, and a bag of money (aka coins) that each visitor can take home. Visitors can take a self-guided tour or take an audio or iPad guided tour. Free entry is worth a visit!
LEGOLAND Discovery Center/SEA LIFE Aquarium has everything LEGO fans will love: factory tours, rides, building opportunities and a 4D theater showing the LEGO Movie. Younger children may enjoy this more, but everyone can appreciate LEGO models and creations.
Adjacent to Legoland is Sea Life, a fun and beautifully decorated aquarium where visitors can pet sharks, walk through shark tunnels and learn about marine life. The aquarium isn’t huge but the exhibits are well put together and little ones will love the Octonauts room!
Fun Things To Do In Austin This Weekend: August 13 15
Located in the Crown Centre, the Coterie brings a live theater experience to children of all ages. Children sit on the floor at the edge of the stage for an interactive experience. Kids will love being a part of the show and the cast and performances are always great.
The World War I Museum and Memorial, the only museum in the United States dedicated to those who fought in the Great War, is one of my favorite history museums. We visited with the kids a few years ago and they were mesmerized everywhere, from the poppy field at the entrance to the life size moat at the tank, they loved every minute.
One of our favorite parts was taking the elevator (and stairs) to the top of the tower to see Kansas City. Get the audio guide for kids as it’s worth learning about the displays and artifacts.
Be sure to grab a bite to eat before your visit because you’ll definitely want to spend at least a few hours here.

Kansas City’s amusement park, Worlds of Fun, has a water park (Ocean of Fun) so the whole family can play all day long. There are many roller coasters and thrill rides, Snoopy Planet and also rides for youngsters. If theme parks are your thing, your family will want to head to Fun Worlds for all the fun!
Note: Kansas City experiences seasonal changes, so some of these attractions are only open in the warmer months. Most of these activities take place indoors, so there should be plenty of fun options for rainy or winter days.
Families looking to be in the middle of the action might want to stay at the Westin Crown Center or the Sheraton Kansas City Crown Center.
If your family wants to shop, try the Hampton Inn & Suites – Country Club Plaza. If your family wants to experience an indoor water park, there is also Great Wolf Lodge near World of Fun.

Families with kids wondering where to eat in Kansas City might want to try one of these: Fritz’s Railroad Restaurant (inside Crown Center, where your burger and fries are delivered to your table by train), Jack’s Steak BBQ (everyone has their favorite BBQ, we love this restaurant in the Country Club Plaza area for its great ribs and best service (elsewhere in KC), or head to Cosentino’s Market and Deli (their soups and salads are perfect for a bar picnic, deli and fresh. Sushi).
