The trails and tennis courts east of the park are a great way to burn off your lunch while diving into some of Summit County’s most popular hiking and biking trails. In the winter, Carter Park is home to one of two sledding hills in Breckenridge – just bring your own sled!

Adjacent to the Breckenridge Recreation Center is Kingdom Park, with softball fields, two playgrounds, a soccer field, a whitewater kayak park and a skateboard park with mini scooters and an 11-foot bowl for daring youngsters. Little ones will love the mine-inspired Prospector Park on North Main Street and the High Line Railroad Park on Boreas Pass Road, home to the real-life No. 1 locomotive. 9 and cars.

A must-do in beautiful Breckenridge, rally the troops and ride the 9.5-mile paved recreational trail from Breckenridge to Frisco, ending at Dillon Reservoir for some water play. Find the Breckenridge Troll. Isaac Hearthstone is a 15-foot-tall troll sculpture located on the Trollstigen Trail in Breckenridge, Colorado. The newly constructed boardwalk is located in the southeast corner of the Stephen C. West Ice Arena parking lot next to the Illinois Gulch Trailhead. Originally built as part of the Breckenridge International Festival of the Arts (BIFA) in August, Isaac is the brainchild of Danish artist Thomas Dumbo, who is known around the world for raising awareness of recycling and reuse by building fantastic objects from scrap.

In Breckenridge, the Free Ride bus system takes you around town and into popular neighborhoods for free. Use it to travel to downtown rentals, shops, and restaurants, or just to rest your sneakers. For a fun ride, cruise down Main Street on the Main Street Retro Trolley. (If you ask nicely, the driver might even ring the bell for you.)

Fly the free BreckConnect Gondola high above the city to Peaks 7 and 8. The cabin seats about eight people, and kids will love the bouncy feeling as your group travels up and over the forested hills. Once at the top, relax and enjoy the view or hike up to the large snow pile, perfect for a summer snowball fight.

Breckenridge has two free sledding hills. Runway Sledding Hill is the latest. It’s BYOS (bring your own sled) or you can rent one from the sled shed. It is an artificial mountain. It’s fast and fun! For a summer alternative, take the free cable car to the base of Peak 8. There’s plenty of fun for the family.

There are many beautiful hiking trails around Breckenridge. In the spring, most trails are quite crowded for snowshoes. You can also rent snowshoes or cross-country skis if you want to explore the trails that way. My favorites are Jesse Mill and Preston Goth Town or Sally Barber. Both have fascinating mine ruins and views. Both hikes are also great in the summer and very doable for families. If you’re headed to the Breckenridge Nordic Center to ski or snowboard, be sure to check out the Hallelujah Cabin.

I’ve been a fan of the troll since it was created for the Breckenridge International Art Festival a few years ago. 15-foot-tall Isaac Heartstone now has his home in the Short Run Forest. It is Breck’s most popular outdoor art exhibit. It’s also a great casual retreat in the summer.

It’s not free, but it’s one of the most unique experiences in Breckenridge. When you visit the Country Boy Mine, learn about Breckenridge’s mining history as you don a hard hat and walk into over 1,000 feet of mine tunnels. It is open all year round. They recently added an extreme sled. There’s also ice skating, snowshoe rentals, gold and donkeys.
