We try to post current and accurate event information, but changes and cancellations do happen, so check the official event website to confirm all details before attending. Say Colorado, and you probably think of beer, speed skiing, and the most independent people in America (after all, they voted to legalize marijuana in 2013). But putting aside the “yeah brah” stereotype, the state encourages residents and tourists to adopt an active, healthy and fun lifestyle. And Denver is the cultural capital at its heart.
With a population of about 3 million, Greater Denver stretches along the eastern side of the Rocky Mountains. Although the area is on the front lines of a mecca for sports fans, Denver itself has a big urban and Western charm; 2 things missing elsewhere in Colorado. Filled with urban parks and botanical gardens, art museums, and hipsters, the downtown district barely scratches the surface for further exploration of the city’s cultural attractions. Here’s our short list of the best things to do in Denver.
Downtown Denver combines the atmosphere of the Wild West and the city. Head to 16th Street Mall to browse decades-old bookstores like Tattered Cover and shop for cowboy gear at Rockmount Ranch Wear. Rockmount is a popular t-shirt manufacturer, a favorite of music legends like Eric Clapton and Bruce Springsteen. Are you thirsty or hungry? Head to Denver’s LoDo neighborhood (downtown) and explore 28 square blocks of restaurants, sports bars and brewpubs. Here you will encounter live music every night of the week in many bars and restaurants.

It may seem like we live in a city surrounded by mountains and desert, but the Denver Downtown Aquarium does not disappoint. More than 1 million gallons of underwater exhibits showcase freshwater and marine ecosystems, home to more than 500 species of marine life. The interactive touch tank where you can feed the stingrays wins our vote for best in show. Other favorites include the coral reef and sunken harbor. Enjoy dinner in the aquarium restaurant featuring 50,000 gallons of colorful tropical fish from the Caribbean, Hawaii, South Pacific and Indian Oceans.
You may recognize this Denver green space from Woody Allen’s sleepover, and it’s just as beautiful on camera. With 3 different locations across the city, the Denver Botanic Garden features a large amphitheater used for summer concerts, a conservatory, theme gardens, and rotating exhibits. Whether you’re a nature lover or looking to escape the concrete jungle without leaving the city limits, the gardens are a must-see.
Stretch your mind and spend a 1/2 day with the kids at one of Denver’s museums or galleries. Learn about dinosaurs at the Morrison National Museum of History (plan to spend an hour here), or visit the Denver Museum of Nature and Science for an IMAX movie or an astronomy show in the planetarium. While you’re at the museum, don’t miss the Great White Shark 3D exhibit. Get your creative juices flowing at the Denver Art Museum, featuring international works and stunning 19th-century Western American paintings.
