Cortez Colorado Mountain Biking – I moved to Durango, Colorado in 2012 to graduate from Fort Lewis College and pursue my mountain bike dreams. Even so, I think no matter where my racing career goes, that little mountain town will be my home. In short, the Four Corners region of the southwestern United States where Durango is located is unlike any other outdoor playground. Our leaders seem to agree that a ridiculous amount of land within a five-hour radius is protected as a national park or national monument.
The Grand Canyon, Arches, Canyonlands, and Mesa Verde National Parks and a large number of national monuments feature a diverse and rugged landscape. Whether you’re a kayaker, hiker, skier, runner, mountain biker or other outdoor enthusiast, you’ll likely run out of time before exploring the mountains and canyons. I love riding my bike in far away countries, but a ride in my own backyard is my idea of a unique vacation.

One thing that makes the area so special is how remote it is. The closest major cities are Albuquerque, Denver and Salt Lake City, but all are within three to six hours. The list includes the city’s largest airports, Durango and Grand Junction. Flying into Albuquerque gives you more flight options, but adds a bit of driving.
This road trip took me to my favorite area, but if I had to choose one place to ride for the rest of my life, it would be my hometown of Durango. It’s hard to describe the number and variety of trails leading out of town. After 8 hours, 80 miles, and 14,000 feet of climbing, we ended the day. We vowed to try again with a better plan, but admitted we were only half done.
Because Durango is geographically located where the high desert meets the mountains and has great geological diversity in the country, there are all kinds of trails—from thornbush, red horse grass, to the iconic black aspen forest. Colorado Track The city’s racing history has contributed to the health and expansion of its track system, and many racing legends like Ned Overend, Greg Herbold and Ruthie Mathes call Durango home. You could easily spend a weekend here and never run the same trail twice. You can head to Horse Gulch or Overend Mountain Park for smoother, flowing options, then head to Field Mountain Park, Rider Ridge or Goody Recreation for more challenging terrain.
The Durango and Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad remains the biggest attraction and is a fun ride for the whole family. It also stars in May’s Iron Horse bike ride, as 3,500 intrepid cyclists attempt to beat it in a one-way race along the 10,000-foot route from Durango to Silverton (you’ll ride the route yourself. An hour north on the Million Dollar Highway (the same route as the Iron Horse Classic Bikes) is the small historic mining town of Silverton, Colorado. At 9,300 feet in a stunning mountain basin, Silverton has a distinctly “hard” feel – an authentic relic of its mining days. In the mountains high above Silverton, you’ll find the most challenging but rewarding section of the 486-mile Colorado Trail. At 80 miles, this iconic trail climbs above the tree line and down Although the lack of oxygen makes driving difficult, the San Juan Country is a bucket list experience for any trail enthusiast. Go to Molasses Pass (back to Durango) and then pick your poison – Engineer Mountain Trail, Cascade Creek or Black Hawk, the choices are plentiful. Keep in mind that if you don’t take a vehicle, you will return to Molasses Pass Road before heading south on Highway 550 to CT.
Another word to the wise: In the middle, Colorado’s monsoons run like clockwork. An early start is recommended before afternoon storms descend Thunderstorms and hail are almost guaranteed, but this means the trails open most mornings back to mint and mud conditions. This is a mountain wonder!
As you drive from Silverton to Grand Junction – a 2 1/2 hour drive – you’ll enjoy the serpentine Million Dollar Highway. This whitewashed road takes us to Colorado, home of Orr Hot Springs and Weisbaden Steam Caves – the perfect gift for a tired body.

An afternoon ride through the dry, rocky desert of Grand Junction is ideal. The greatest concentration of trails can be found on the Noon Loop trail system southwest of the city. As a testament to the quality and density of the world-class track, the Epic Ride series has held events here for years. Loop options abound, but the Gunny Loop, Andy Loop, and Butterknife are some of my favorites.
The Noon Loop Trailhead is below the Colorado National Monument This is one of the most beautiful roads I have ever driven or ridden You can add about an hour to our next stop on this trip by crossing the monument. It’s right on the street!

Mountain Biking Mecca Mesa Verde Country Is A Must Ride
After a 13/4 hour drive southwest on Interstate 70, the world’s most famous mountain biking destination is the star of the fourth day. Moab has made a name for itself since the early days of knobby-t knobby bikes, as its stunning terrain is the perfect backdrop for a quirky magazine cover. This mystery remains to this day, attracting all kinds of road car enthusiasts around the world. But, don’t be fooled; The terrain is raw and unforgiving. Inexperienced riders will likely feel themselves out. In recent years, the city of Moab has done a great job of adding an entry-level trail system to its portfolio of excellent technical rides. For those who are new to singletrack, Brand Trail System or Town Pipedream can be a good choice. For experienced riders, the preferred areas of Hole Enchilada, Mag 7 and Amasa offer challenging rides with great returns. For those looking for a great fitness challenge, the 100-mile White Rim Loop is a unique way to see the majesty of Canyonlands National Park.
Moab has two national parks within a 10-minute drive of downtown Arch Hikes like Arch Delicate are easily done after an afternoon of hitting the singletrack.

Less than two hours from Moab, our tour ends in the southeastern state of Colorado. While Cortez may not have the same amount of trails as some of the other towns on this list, its terrain may have its fair share of hits.
