We spent an hour watching bald eagles and seabirds, and taking in the scenery, we drove comfortably to the National Wildlife Refuge. The tour ended at Blue Pete’s restaurant, which specializes in seafood.

When you set out in search of the ultimate adventure during your Virginia Beach vacation, we didn’t expect one of the greatest adventures of our trip. The Virginia Beach Military Aviation Museum offers guided tours of dozens of World War I and II aircraft, as well as the opportunity to fly one of them! Center visitors can fly with real pilots in World War II biplanes.
We met Capt. Robert “Boom” Powell at the airfield, donned our flight suits, and flew over the area for 15 minutes. There he showed an old airstrip from World War II. Biplanes cannot take off in strong winds. The pilot then crossed the runway to take off in either direction.
After all, war doesn’t wait for the wind. Maneuvering as the Boom dives into the air and the wind rips my helmet was the thrill of a lifetime.
