It’s just sand, but it’s piled high, and it’s in the Rocky Mountains, far from the beach and the beach. Located just minutes from Alamosa in the spectacular and extraordinary San Luis Valley, this national park and preserve has its only major attraction, the massive sand dunes that can be seen from afar.
When the sand, along with other sediments, was carried by rivers and streams into the San Luis Valley, the great sand dunes formed. Blown by the wind, it pressed against the Sangre de Cristo Mountains, and the opposite wind flow helped transform a certain bend in the ridge into a high dune.
You can go there anytime, some say it’s best to see the sky after dark. More energetic hikers will climb to the top of the park’s largest Star Dune and try sand surfing on the way down. The area has camping, off-road trails, hiking, and seasonal Meadow Creek, perfect for what appears in the photo above. Zapata Falls is just down the road.
