Here’s the little-known secret of many expensive (read: expensive) ski resorts: They’re home to the best and most convenient luxury hotels you’ll ever set foot in. About six new ones opened. In Colorado over the past three years, this trend, according to our statistics, shows no signs of abating. One of the biggest draws? Society.
“I think any town that has lodging does well, for the same reason I’m looking for a [traveler] hotel,” said Lori Roberts, executive director of the Salida Chamber of Commerce. The market now has two hotels, the Simple Hotel and Inn and the new Salida Hotel, which European tourists often call and inquire about. “As part of the culture, you think, ‘Hey, where are you from?'” “You’re called to say, ‘I think the success of these things is: you meet people from all over the world.’
Karen Carnuta, who recently opened the Salida Hotel in February 2016, says that every part of the room, the chairs are oriented and designed to encourage conversation. There are no TVs in the building and they don’t play music. But there is plenty of space to meet fellow travellers.
“We get a lot of people who might buy a really nice place in town, but they stay here [because of the neighborhood],” Carnuta said.

The community’s area for lodging inspired Pancho Batchelor to open the Mineshaft Inn in Ricoh, outside Telluride, in 2013. He knew there was a need for cabins in the area, and an empty Victorian house seemed like the perfect fit. Many of his guests become friends and help each other during their stay, such as driving to Telluride.
“It’s about the backpacker lifestyle,” Batchelor said. “I’d rather go camping than stay alone in a hotel.”
