There are 3,422 named mountains in Colorado. The highest and most prominent mountain is Mount Elbert. Although the highest peaks in the contiguous United States are in California, Colorado boasts the highest number of fourteen in the country, two of which, Pikes Peak and Mount Evans, are accessible by car.

Spanning thirteen counties and approximately 150 miles long, the San Juan Mountains, nicknamed by San Juan residents, claim the title of Colorado’s largest mountain range and are considered the state’s crown jewel for hiking, backpacking and other outdoor activities. Stretching across the southwest corner of the state, San Juan contains some of the highest and most broken peaks in the continental United States, including thirteen of Colorado’s fourteen, the highest of which is Uncompahgre Peak at 14,308 feet. Other notable peaks in the San Juan Mountains include Mount Sneffels, Redcloud Peak, Handies Peak, Mount Wilson, Mount Eolus, and Wetterhorn Peak.
Another major mountain range, the Front Range, is home to Colorado’s most populous cities: Colorado Springs, Denver, Boulder, and Fort Collins. Known as the gateway to Rocky Mountain National Park, the 200-mile Front Range runs north-south from the Wyoming state line to Pueblo, Colorado. At nearly 10,000 feet above the Great Plains, visitors can expect to be humbled by towering peaks like Longs Peak, Mount Evans, and Pikes Peak. Within the Front Range, the Peak to Peak Scenic Byway traverses 55 miles of pristine Colorado wilderness, alpine lakes, quaint towns, and offers views of famous peaks like the rugged Indian Peaks.
Other popular mountains in Colorado are the Sawatch Range, the Sangre de Cristos, and the Never Summer Range. The Sawatch Range in particular boasts some of the highest mountain peaks in the region, including Colorado’s highest peak, Mt. Albert.
Colorado doesn’t boast the largest number of national parks in the US, with only four of the state’s total of 62. But these 4 are absolutely spectacular and very diverse: rugged peaks in a mountainous environment, cliff-dwelling mesas, the tallest sand dunes in the United States, and canyons .
On Top Of The Rockies: Climbing Colorado’s Mt. Elbert
The Sneffels Range, which separates the cities of Ouray and Telluride, is one of Colorado’s most popular hiking areas. There are miles of hiking trails for different fitness levels. Hike the 7.6-mile Blue Lakes Trail past turquoise alpine lakes, pristine waterfalls and views of the famous Mount Sneffels, or explore the more challenging 11-mile trail to Redcloud Peak and Sunshine Peak to experience two of Colorado’s Famous Fourteen.
Rocky Mountain National Park offers visitors more than 300 miles of hiking trails and a variety of other recreational activities. Embark on a challenging journey to Mt. Ida, Longs Peak or Hallett Peak for panoramic views of the Rockies or hike to one of the park’s popular lakes such as Bear Lake or Sprague Lake.
Maroon Bells is one of the most photographed places in Colorado. Maroon Bells, a signature feature of the Rocky Mountains, offers visitors beautiful views, pristine lakes, golden aspens, and the chance to be surrounded by maroon bell peaks. The most popular Maroon Lake Trail offers views of two iconic peaks, Maroon Peak and North Maroon Peak.
Pikes Peak offers a unique outdoor experience as the summit can be climbed, backpacked, or visitors can take a scenic hike to the summit. A historic cogwheel train even goes to the top. The Barr Trail, a 26-mile trail, is the most popular trail used to summit Pikes Peak, but there are a variety of trails to choose from.

I was born in the Bavarian Alps and lived there for the first nine years of my life, so it’s safe to say that I was born with a love of the mountains in my blood. A few years after emigrating to the United States, I eventually moved to Colorado, where I lived for over 40 years in the western suburbs of Denver, right at the foot of the Rocky Mountains. There my love for the mountains grew as high as the mighty Mountains. Although I have returned to the Alps many times for some of the best hiking of my life, I have also hiked in other places around the world, including New Zealand, Australia, Borneo, the Philippines, Hong Kong, Norway and more. Great Brittany Ray. But so far most of my hikes have been in the US and most of them in Colorado. I’ve logged over 10,000 miles since I started keeping records, mostly after retiring in 2008 from a career as a civil engineer. In the process, I gained over 2 million feet (about 390 miles). And I’m still doing well, with my lovely wife as a hiking partner, but now we live in the mountains of Southern California, where we’ll be moving in late 2021. We’ve found lots of new places to hike.
