Monarch Scenic Tram (salida)
The magic happened when we parked on F Street, the main thoroughfare of this mountain town. Many of the art galleries caught my eye, but the comic book store caught my teenage self’s attention.
Forget the typical gift shops, downtown Salida has fun shops you won’t find anywhere else. You can find everything you need at F Street Five and Dime.
There are three libraries with fantasy games and comics, which double as gathering places for weekly Magic Nights and Dungeons and Dragons events.
Another unique place in town is Howl Mercantile. Like the old store, this place also has gifts, coffee, ice cream, rental equipment, and Airbnb!

Salida was considered one of Colorado’s first creative districts, and the evidence is everywhere. Stroll through the city’s twenty-two artist galleries.

In all the unique shops, you can see pictures on the brick walls. It features the city’s history, popular sports like whitewater rafting, and vintage advertisements.
Need a place to keep the kids busy while they wait for dinner? Check out Fun Street Family Arcade – From skeeball to pinball and everything in between, this place will bring out the kid in you.
Head to Fritz on E. Sackett Ave for tapas on the patio. I can’t recommend a task list because it changes so often.
Save room and the next stop is Amica’s wood-fired pizza, or if you’re with friends, split a large calzone.
Best Mountain Towns In Colorado (by A Local)
Take a step back in time with a milkshake at the old-fashioned counter of Salida Pharmacy and Fountain.
Salida is located near the Arkansas River (or Arch) and you can walk through Riverside Park. At Riverside Park, you’ll find the usual park features like open spaces, playgrounds, and benches, but there’s a stone wall—so Colorado.
Who says the beach has to be by the sea? The Salida Riverwalk has its own beach. Enjoy lunch from Sweetie’s Sandwich Shop, book all reservations, and a day by the water.

You don’t have to go far to find amazing hikes. The Chamber of Commerce has a guide to options in the city, including the famous Tenderfoot Hill or Ace Mountain – which you can’t see from the city.
First Timer’s Guide To Winter In Salida
For something heavier? Above the Savach Range in Chaffee County. There are at least 14 in the state.
Rainy day? Don’t worry, a trip to the Salida Museum just off F Street will delight everyone and you’ll learn a little about this Rocky Mountain town.
Near Salida is a two-story home, both with beautiful views. Visit Vino Salida on the weekends for live music or visit their events page for wine classes.
Rejuvenate with the healing power of hot springs. Five within an hour, including one right in the city center near the Chamber of Commerce. We stayed at Mount Princeton Hot Springs Resort, which offered a more rustic feel.

High season means high water in June from mid-May to Labor Day and high water through mid-August.
Kayak the 1,200-foot-long Salida Whitewater Park on the Arkansas River in downtown Salida. In summer you will also find paddle boards and body boards in the park.
In addition to being a whitewater hot spot, the Arkansas River is also known for its fantastic fishing. Near Salida is a 28-mile stretch of Gold Medal waters that are great for trout fishing.
Captain Zipline is on my list for my next visit. I’m always looking for ziplines and this one has a tutorial, looks like a real gem.

Brown Canyon became a National Monument in 2015. It is part of the Sawatch Mountain range and covers over 21,500 acres including the San Isabel National Forest, where we skied and dog walked.
On my bucket list, a horseback riding adventure where we see bighorn sheep, black bear, elk and more! I love watching wildlife.

One of the most popular things to do in Salida CO during the winter is to get out on the snow. Monarch Mountain Ski Resort is the premier ski resort on Monarch Pass and is great for all skill levels. That’s why we found this gem of an area.
There’s a lot on the slopes. Take a snowmobile tour of Isabel National Forest with expert guides from Monarch Snowmobile Tours. The tour is a combination of adventure sports, spectacular mountain views and an old mine ride. Don’t worry speed freaks, it’s time to test your mettle in the open air.
