Maroon Bells is said to be the most photographed mountain in the United States. I don’t know if it’s true, but the scenery here is really amazing! The mountains and the stunning reflections on the lake turn the landscape into a real picture.
The great thing about visiting Maroon Bells is that they are all easily accessible. You don’t have to walk to see the best views; the best views are just a short walk from the parking lot. You can also explore the area along the beautiful lakeside trail, and there are other great hikes in the area (see below for more on Crater Lake).
Good to know: The trail to Maroon Bells is only open in summer, from mid-May to early October. September is a particularly beautiful time of year as the aspen trees along the lake take on their fall colors. !

Tip: Visit Maroon Bells in the morning. This is when reflections are at their best and wildlife is more likely to be seen in the area. The Silver Queen Gondola is one of Aspen’s unmissable events! It has direct access to the summit of Mount Aspen from downtown and offers some of the best mountain views in the area. After about 15 minutes, you’ll reach the sundeck at an elevation of 11,200 feet (3,414 meters). The view from the top is unbelievable!
In the winter, this is one of the main ski areas around Aspen. But you don’t have to go skiing to take the cable car up the mountain and enjoy the scenery. In summer, enjoy the views from the cable car and the summit, or go hiking in the surrounding area.

The area around Maroon Bells and Crater Lake also has a variety of wildlife. If you visit during quieter times, you are more likely to see moose. Mind you, this is still a bear market. However, if you’re visiting during the daytime in summer, it’s usually very busy and your chances of encountering a bear are pretty much nil.
