Columbus, Ohio is known for a few things. It is the capital of Ohio and the largest city in the state. It’s known as the sports-oriented Ohio State University (yes, “The” is actually part of the university’s name). And the Columbus Zoo, with director emeritus Jack Hannah, is world-renowned primarily for its gorillas.

Most people in Ohio know this about Columbus. You should visit at least once to go to the zoo or see the exhibits at the Columbus Museum of Applied Science (COSI). They probably saw the famous Buckeyes play in Ohio Stadium.

But not all Ohioans know that you can take a falconry lesson, visit an ornamental park, or visit up to 41 craft breweries in the Greater Columbus area.

Fun Things To Do In Greater Columbus This Weekend, Including Kendrick Lamar, Taste

When my husband Elliot and I started talking about planning a weekend getaway to Columbus this summer, I knew we didn’t want to do the “normal” things in Columbus.

And as we began to explore some of the more unusual and unique things to do in Columbus, themes began to emerge. From ax throwing to hawks to brewery tours, our weekend began to take a distinctly “masculine” trajectory.

Whether you’re planning a bachelor party in Columbus or a fun couples getaway like ours, here’s how to spend a guys’ weekend in Columbus.

After driving the two hours to Columbus and checking into our hotel, we headed downtown to take advantage of the gorgeous late afternoon. Our destination was the Shioto Mile, a river park interspersed with green spaces and bike paths that runs along the Shioto River from the Arena District to the Columbus Whittier Peninsula.

The green space and views of the city were great, but I was obsessed with finding the 3 deer statues scattered throughout the park. “Scioto” is the Native American word for “deer,” but this statue isn’t *just* a deer. They are deer posing as humans and I couldn’t get enough of them (especially the one standing on St. Rich’s Bridge)!

After a nice walk along the river (probably too many deer photos) we had dinner and headed up to Stars Indoor Sports. We wanted to try something new there. It was an ax throw!

Columbus Ax Throwing is great for a fun date night, and it’s also great for a bachelor party because it holds up to 12 people in the “lane” and you can grab a beer from the concession stand to drink while you throw.

We didn’t know what to expect from this ax throwing experience, but we both ended up loving it. First the instructor showed us how to handle and throw the ax properly, and after the training we started playing. We only had 4 people booked in at our time so we had plenty of chances!

Downtown Columbus, Ohio Weekend Getaway Guide Story

When I heard that Columbus had a Topiary Park, I knew I had to go. I justified this by pointing out that topiaries use all sorts of manly tools like chain saws to shape them. (right?!)

Topiary Park is located on the former grounds of the Ohio School for the Deaf, today in the former School for the Deaf Park, a residential neighborhood near downtown.

The Topiary Park itself was created in 1988 and is completely unique. Topiary, a reproduction of a painting by Georges Seurat

No trip to Columbus is complete without spending time in the trendy Short North neighborhood. Filled with art and great restaurants and shops, this neighborhood is one of our favorites in Columbus. You can explore it on foot and that’s exactly what we did.

The 15 Best Things To Do In Columbus, Ohio

I also made sure to visit the Arnold Schwarzenegger statue outside the convention center. If you’re wondering why there’s an Arnold statue in Ohio, it’s because the annual Arnold Classic Sports/Bodybuilding competition is held right here in Columbus.

Finally, don’t miss the North Market, the main market in the Short North. This market dates back to 1876 and is popular with locals and tourists alike. There are plenty of places to eat, with stalls selling everything from meat to donuts to beer.

Columbus has no less than 41 different craft breweries and six breweries. That means you could visit here all weekend and just scratch the surface.

Those interested in exploring the Columbus beer scene can check out the Columbus Ale Trail or join a Columbus Brew Adventures tour.

Since Elliot prefers spirits to beer, we decided to take a brewery tour and check out the Watershed Distillery. Founded in 2010, Watershed is still a family-owned microbrewery producing primarily bourbon and gin.

Here you can taste up to 6 different spirits on a distillery tour for $15, which is a great value! (And I even found a drink I like – their Nocino is delicious!)

Can we really go to Columbus and not play sports or something? Columbus is a sports-loving city, so there’s a good chance there will be some competition. If an OSU team is not playing, it could be an NHL city hockey team, an MLS soccer team, or a Triple-A baseball team.

We were in town when there was a big gymnastics event at the GK Classic and Simone Biles (yes, Olympic star Simone Biles) was scheduled to compete, so Elliot convinced me to go. (To be honest, it wasn’t very convincing!)

Best Columbus Day Weekend Getaways

Start the last day of your manly weekend in Columbus with a bang or a bang. The Ohio School of Falconry offers educational and fun introductory falconry “classes” every weekend from April through December at Camp Mary Orton in Columbus.

I knew very little about falconry and wasn’t quite sure what to expect from the experience, but it was an amazing morning! Not only did we encounter several raptors, from a barn owl to a red-tailed hawk, but
