Denver is the largest city in Colorado. The city is at an altitude of 1609 metres, due to which it is called the Mile-High City as it is actually almost a mile above sea level.
Denver is home to more than 200 parks, and its elevations offer expansive views of the nearby Rockies. This and more make it one of our favorite places to visit in Colorado.
The town began to boom in the summer of 1858 during the Pikes Peak Gold Rush. Denver’s humble beginnings as a frontier town that provided gambling, saloons, livestock and goods to local miners led the city to branch out from its roots and transition into regional capital.

There are almost too many things for kids to do in Denver. But I’m going to take this time to focus on the things that make family travel to Denver so unique.
Denver is one of my favorite cities. It is full of incredible sights and attractions. So wait, here is the list of things to do in Denver.
Yes, I’ll jump into the goodies! Found in an industrial area on Washington Street. It seems like an odd place to take the kids in Denver. But once you walk through the door you’ll understand why.
Hammond’s Candy Factory doesn’t just make candy. They behave in the same classic style as they did a century ago. A free factory tour will introduce you to delicious lollipops and ribbon candies that are hand-made and indulgent.

Denver City Park is one of the best places to visit in Denver with kids. This sprawling green space is home to some of Denver’s most popular attractions, including the Denver Museum of Nature and Science and the Denver Zoo.
Built in the late 1800s, the park is one of Denver’s oldest public spaces.
Throughout the park you’ll find lush lawns, playgrounds, bike rentals, and hiking trails. You can even rent a swan boat for one of those Instagram-worthy moments on Lake Ferrill.

At the east end of City Park, the Denver Zoo is one of Denver’s most popular family activities. The zoo is home to over 3,000 animals, including elephants, giraffes, orangutans and lions.

Kids go crazy for the space experiences at the Gates Planetarium. And the archaeological sand pits and moving water features provide an enjoyable experience.

The Children’s Museum of Denver is a popular place for visitors to Denver with young children, focusing on children ages 4 to 8.
This fun and engaging museum is a playful attraction filled with water features, playgrounds, grocery stores, fire departments, art studios, and even a DIY area for little creators. Kids can also take part in cooking workshops in the Teaching Kitchen.
A central building may not sound very exciting for a family trip to Denver, but Colorado’s state capital is a blast to explore even with young children.
Free guided tours are offered Monday through Friday. Groups of more than 10 people must book in advance. The tour includes all kinds of fun details about the building and the history of Denver and Colorado. There is also a fun playground.
Best Kid Friendly Things To Do In Denver — Cosmos Mariners: Destination Unknown
The grounds themselves are beautiful too. And stopping at the Mile-High Step near the front entrance makes for a great photo.
Rocky Mountain Arsenal National Wildlife Refuge is a short drive from Denver International Airport. This wildlife hotspot is one of the best free things to do in Denver.
The park features an 11-mile wildlife loop where visitors can explore the various animals in the refuge, including bison, deer, coyotes, prairie dogs, and more.

Standing in one of the most unique and beautiful outdoor concert venues is an experience that’s hard to forget. And you can time your visit to catch one of the world-renowned musical performances at the Red Rocks Amphitheater.
Even if you can’t get tickets to your favorite band, Red Rocks Park is still an exciting place to explore. Our kids loved running up and down the rocks. There are also dozens of beautiful trails for hiking, biking or horseback riding.
Take a short 20-minute drive from downtown Denver to Morrison and Dinosaur Ridge and you’ll find yourself following in the footsteps of dinosaurs. Literally!
This world famous archaeological site was first excavated in 1877. And since then, hundreds of tracks from dozens of dinosaur species have been uncovered as they made their way through what was once a mangrove swamp.
Top 3 Family Friendly Denver Destinations
Just minutes from Dinosaur Ridge is the fun and adventurous Colorado Railroad Museum.
This fun and exciting train museum features historic locomotives over a hundred years old. All are displayed in a yard that depicts an 1880 station from the early days of the Colorado Railroad.
You can even sign up for an outdoor train ride through the Colorado countryside, complete with a vintage diesel engine, for an added treat. Learn more here.
The most popular theme park in Denver is Elitch Gardens, which is located right in front of downtown Denver and features rides and a water park.
Best Things To Do In Denver With Toddlers
Lakeside Amusement Park, which opened in 1908, is one of the few remaining family amusement parks in the United States. You can find him in Northwest Denver.
Water World is located just outside the north end of the city in Federal Heights. It has some fun wave pools and rapids.
Just 10 minutes east of downtown, the Denver Botanical Gardens is one of the most relaxing and fun things to do in Denver with kids.
Peaceful paths winding through the gardens provide an easy urban escape. This is one of the most beautiful paths on this side of the Garden of the Gods. And the 3-acre Mordecai Children’s Garden is a fun place for little ones to dig, explore, and get dirty while they play.
Kid Friendly Things To Do By Denver
The Denver Mint is one of only four active mints in the United States. If you find a small “D” on the top of one of your coins, it was struck at the Denver Mint.
The 45-minute coin operated tours are one of the free things to do in Denver with kids. You’ll learn about the history of the mint and how US coins are made and made available to the public.
There are few things my kids love more than butterflies flying by. And outside of Denver in Westminster, the Butterfly Pavilion is one of the best.

Before I recommend this attraction, I’ll be completely honest and say that there are some things I absolutely hate.
The Denver Downtown Aquarium is well organized and offers fun and exciting ways to explore the underwater world. There are touch tanks and displays that the kids will love.
