Best City To Stay In Costa Rica – My love affair with Costa Rica began over 20 years ago, in the early days of ecotourism. This was my second trip outside of the US and the first to teach me the importance of protecting the environment and wildlife.
We explored most of the central and western regions of the country, from Arenal Volcano and the Monteverde Cloud Forest to the Nicoya Peninsula and the Cano Negro Wildlife Refuge (Nicaragua’s northern border).

This secluded eco-lodge sits on the edge of Corcovado National Park, in an area without an airport or roads, a two-hour boat ride from the nearest town. It’s as close to the park as you can get without camping and is one of the few resorts in Costa Rica to earn an A5 Leaf rating for sustainable tourism.
American scientist Stephen Lill bought this area in 1974 (a year before the creation of the park) to try his hand at farming. For 20 years, it was a 170-hectare nature reserve (to this day, monkeys, sloths and birds live here), and in 1994 it opened the Casa Corcovado Jungle Lodge.
The resort has 14 charming bungalows, a hacienda-style Spanish restaurant, two swimming pools, beautiful gardens, a lounge/lounge and a margarita bar. It offers stunning sunset views. Rooms are spacious and secluded, with screened-in balconies, hammocks and outdoor showers.

Bucket List Worthy Ways To Experience Ecotourism In Costa Rica
In the mountains above San Jose, just 15 minutes from Costa Rica International Airport, Heredia is home to the country’s first boutique hotel, Finca Rosa Blanca Coffee Plantation Resort (FRB).
It was the first destination in Costa Rica to score 100% in the sustainable tourism certification. It is a sustainable national standard, a certification that gives one to five green leaves to companies committed to sustainable practices.
Ecotourism has deep roots in the FRB, but so do art and coffee. This resort feels like a lush part of a nature reserve with one of Costa Rica’s most beautiful coffee plantations growing in the shade. It’s also a creative haven, with each room uniquely designed with architectural details, paintings, original artwork and local crafts.
FRB is within a day’s drive of many parks and activities (including rafting, canopy tours, cultural tours, and a volcano), but there are many obstacles to include areas with more than 50 native fruit, tree, and plant species. other tropical plants and many native and migratory birds.

Once thought of as a paradise, the small, cozy town of Puerto Viejo de Talamanca has become a popular tourist destination on Costa Rica’s Caribbean coast. An hour south of the port of Limon (and not too far from Panama), Puerto Viejo has a West Indian flavor and is well worth a visit.
Our favorite place to stay in the area is the adults-only Hotel Banana Azul, which sits on one of PV’s best beaches. The grounds are a real botanical garden – lush and beautifully landscaped, surrounded by a pond with small waterfalls and a thatched patio.
La Fortuna, Costa Rica Guide: How To Plan Your Perfect Trip
Built from natural hardwoods, the resort has a warm and rustic feel with comfortable beds, tropical views and private bathrooms. Second floor rooms have French doors leading to a covered balcony overlooking the pool, each with its own table and chairs, and some with hammocks.
At night, open the doors to enjoy the evening breeze off Playa Negra beach. The beach itself is calm, with occasional waves big enough for light surfing.
During the day, visit the nearby Cahuita National Park, the beautiful beach town of Punta Uva, the Jaguar Rescue Center or go swimming at Playa Cocles. The hotel’s restaurant serves delicious food for breakfast, lunch and dinner, and the minibar is open all day.
The resort staff can also assist with arranging a variety of spa services, day trips, and airport transportation in Bocas del Toro, Panama. But one thing is for sure, you will never be ready to leave!
