Colorado Mountain Hostels To Save Your Budget
Here, many of our budget ski towns have a little-known secret: they’re home to some of the most beautiful and luxurious accommodation you’ll ever find. At least 6 have opened in Colorado over the past three years, by our count, and there’s no sign of the trend slowing. One of the biggest draws? community
“I think any town that has hostels will do well, for the same reason I’m looking [as a tourist],” said Lori Roberts, executive director of the Salida Chamber of Commerce. The town is now home to two hostels – The Simple Lodge and Hostel and the brand new Salida hostel – and European tourists often ask about them. “You’re almost invited as part of the culture to say, ‘Hey, where are you from?’ And I think that’s the success of these things: you meet people from all over the world.”
Karen Karnuta, who just opened Salida Hostel in February 2016, said every aspect of the house, down to the direction of the chairs, is designed to encourage conversation. There are no televisions in the building and they do not play music. But there are many places to visit with fellow travelers.
“We have a lot of people who could pay for the nicest place in town, but they’re here [because of the community],” Karnuta said.

The community nature of the inns also inspired Pancho Batchelor to open the Mineshaft Inn in Rico, just outside Telluride, in 2013. He knew there was an affordable place to stay in the area, and the vacant Victorian house seemed perfect for it. Many of their guests become friends and help each other during their stay, such as on the way to Telluride.
“It’s about that backpacker lifestyle,” Batchelor says, adding that he thinks more hostels are definitely on the way. “I’d rather camp than be alone in a lonely hotel room.”
