Orr had bombed a brand new downhill run at Floyd Hill in Clear Creek County. A one-way road is designed and constructed for bicycles only. The 1.3-mile section is part of a project with 12 to 14 miles of hiking and biking trails starting at 8,000 feet down Clear Creek Canyon in Jefferson County, the first in the foothills west of Denver.
Known as Segment 4 or Gateway, it features steep cliffs and large jumps as it flows over 700 vertical feet. There are tall berms at the bottom of the speed and lower speed options for mountain bikers who want to use all the cushioned travel offered by today’s high-end full-suspension rides.
“The imagination and creativity of the design is just amazing,” said Gary Moore, executive director of COMBA, the Colorado Mountain Bike Association, on his second day of preparing to pedal the new trail. “You can ride this thing 15 times and never do it the same way.”

The lock allows riders to test their skills without worrying about walkers, runners, dogs or other mountain bikers. Although not for beginner mountain bikers, the trail has many easy routes and options around steep and rocky terrain.
This is one of the few top-to-bottom bike trails in Colorado outside of a ski resort built specifically for downhill. As collisions continue to break out on heavily trafficked multi-use trails, the Floyd Hill Open Space Downhill Trail offers an alternative for mountain bikers looking to speed down technical routes. (Any paths with uphill traffic are not recommended.)
“The mountain bike experience isn’t the constant worry of people coming the other way or a dog running over you,” says Moore. “It’s about being able to go out there and think about yourself and the trail and know that the trail will hold you.”
Two years ago, Jefferson County and Clear Creek County jointly purchased 108 acres on Floyd Hill, giving hillside access to more than 600 acres of Clear Creek County.
U.s. Mountain Biking Thrives In High School Leagues
The trails at the new Floyd Hill Open Space happened quickly as a result of a broad partnership that included Clear Creek County Open Space, Jefferson County Open Space, Mountain Area Land Trust, Trust for Public Lands, Great Outdoors Colorado, Gates Family Foundation. , COMBA and several cycling clubs and bicycle shops.
Construction of the trail system on a parcel north of Interstate 70 along Clear Creek-Jefferson County began in the fall of 2017 with an easily accessible trail and a short section of hiking trail.
After several months of public meetings over the winter, the Floyd Hill Open Space Trail Master Plan was finalized with plans for about 13 miles of trails reaching the Peaks to Plains Trail in Clear Creek Canyon. Future plans call for the Clear Creek Trails to connect to the Coastal Mayhem Gulch Trailhead, which ascends the canyon to trails near Jeffco’s Centennial Cone.
About 4.5 miles of the Floyd Hill Trail — including a hiking trail and less challenging laps of rolling singletrack — opened last summer, and a new downhill trail opened last week after about two months of construction.

At the top, the trail offers views of the Front Range, Centennial Cone and the Continental Divide. Cyclists see more when they pedal. The trail has a myriad of options, from difficult to super expert, descending to interstate.
The trail design and construction team at FlowRide Concepts—which designs technical bike parks in Frisco, Broomfield and Steamboat Springs, as well as trail systems across the country—built a signature downhill for the open network.
COMBA’s “SWAT Team” trail construction technical experts put in hundreds of hours to lend mini diggers and equipment to reduce costs and speed up trail construction. This COMBA team builds the multilanes and other sections of the trail and assists with the complex engineering and construction required to cut a high-speed downhill up the mountain.
Mountain Biking Rules & Etiquette
The growing expertise of professional trail designers is helping Clear Creek County establish itself as a mountain biking destination. The county is known for its steep, loose and dry terrain, which does not necessarily contribute to high-quality mountain biking. But the new techniques, tools and expertise offered by FlowRide and COMBA are changing that, said Clear Creek County Commissioner Sean Wood.
“Trails at Floyd Hill seemed like a really good opportunity to take advantage of the enthusiasm in the mountain bike community to do something new and do something better,” says Wood.
While Idaho Springs is working on a plan to develop a sustainable mountain bike trail network in Virginia Gulch as an economic driver and community asset, Clear Creek County is in the midst of an in-depth study of how it can fuel a recreation-based economy.
It’s a process echoed in many mountain communities as leaders work to develop an economy that doesn’t depend on the boom in extractive industries.

The county is in the midst of a long-term planning process around recreation, exploring options for new parks and motorized and human-powered recreation, Wood said.
“We put a lot of time into it, and we want to be very intentional about what we do,” says Wood. “We are very excited to work with Jeffco and create relationships that will open up many opportunities. We believe what happens at Floyd Hill will add a unique flavor to our existing trail networks.”
