With early riders from California and British Columbia, Crested Butte played an important role in the early days of mountain biking.

It was the enthusiastic racing community of the 1970s that took it upon themselves to tinker with rattles and road bikes to find a better alternative to “hand hangers” when navigating steep mountains and off-road terrain.

As an Aspen native, I may be biased, but the Rockies and western slopes offer some of the best mountain biking in the country. Resorts looking to accommodate off-season recreation seekers have upped their game, creating miles of trails, world-class bike parks and incredible downhill accessibility. Snowmass, Crested Butte, Breckenridge and Vail resorts are designed to create exciting trails for all skill levels and goals.

History tells us that Crested Butte roads were not paved until the early 1980s. Local manufacturers make heavy but durable bikes to navigate the potholed roads caused by extreme weather conditions in the mountains. As these mountain bikes began to become the mode of transportation of choice, a new obsession was born.
