Greater Denver, home to nearly 3 million people, stretches along the eastern side of the Rockies. While the region is a major mecca for extreme sports enthusiasts, Denver itself boasts urban diversity and Western charm — two things missing elsewhere in Colorado. The city’s parks and botanical gardens, art museums and hipster-filled downtown neighborhoods barely scratch the surface for those looking to further explore the city’s cultural attractions. Downtown Denver combines a Wild West vibe with urban chic. Head to the 16th Street Mall for decades-old stores like Tattered Cover and shop for cowboy gear at Rockmount Ranch Wear. Rockmount is the infamous inventor of the button-down shirt, a favorite among music legends like Eric Clapton and Bruce Springsteen. Thirsty or hungry? Head to Denver’s LoDo neighborhood (downtown) and explore 28 square blocks of restaurants, sports bars, and brewpubs. Here you will find live music every night of the week in various bars and restaurants.

It may seem like an odd place in a city surrounded by mountains and desert, but the Denver Central Aquarium does not disappoint. More than 1 million gallons of underwater exhibits illuminate freshwater and ocean ecosystems with more than 500 species of marine life. An interactive touch tank where you can groom the rails wins our vote for coolest display. Other favorites include the coral lagoon and the shipwreck. Dine at the Aquarium Restaurant, surrounded by a 50,000-gallon aquarium with brightly colored tropical fish from the Caribbean, Hawaii, South Pacific and Indian Ocean.
You may recognize this Denver green space from Woody Allen’s The Sleeper, and it’s just as beautiful as it looks on camera. Located in three different locations across the city, the Denver Botanic Garden has a large amphitheater used for summer concerts, a conservatory, themed gardens, and temporary exhibitions. Whether you’re a nature lover or just want to escape the concrete jungle without leaving the city limits, the Gardens are a must-see.
Take it easy and spend a 1/2 day with the kids at one of Denver’s museums or art galleries. Brush up on your dinosaur knowledge at the Morrison National Museum of History (plan to spend an hour here), or visit the Denver Museum of Nature and Science for an IMAX movie or an astronomy demonstration in the planetarium. While at the museum, don’t miss the 3D exhibition of the great white dog. Get your creative juices flowing at the Denver Art Museum featuring international works and enlarged photographs of the 19th century American West.
Watch the Colorado Rockies hit home runs at Coors Field, the tallest park in Major League Baseball. This is a relatively new place in Denver that is still expanding. Current construction project: A three-story, 38,000-square-foot space with a VIP terrace and 52 craft beers on tap. Down at Coors Field is also home to Blue Moon Brewing Co.

One of America’s largest water parks is less than 10 miles north of Denver and a must-see during the hot summer months. Imagine the Ferry Building in San Francisco and give it an organic touch in Colorado. Voila, there’s The Source, a 26,000-square-foot 19th-century warehouse on Brighton Boulevard that was converted into a new market in 2013. With several local breweries, bakeries, butchers, specialty grocers and artisans under one roof, The Source is well on its way to becoming the city’s most popular foodie destination.

The Children’s Museum of Denver is one of the best children’s museums in the country. Children create products from recycled materials in the assembly plant, experiment with bubbles in the cool bumblebee room, take care of stuffed animals in the veterinary clinic, paint beautiful pictures in the art studio, dress up as animals in the large indoor yard and much more.
Put on your firefighting gear and slide down a fire pole at the Denver Fire Museum, housed in a 1909 firehouse. Learn about the history of firefighting and more at this fun and educational museum. Follow the children’s guide and collect a collection of vintage fire trucks. Upstairs, learn about fire safety and see how firefighters lived.
