The lodge is a registered National Historic Landmark. We found out why on this Great Lakes vacation. A gentleman named Ro Emery is credited as the founder of Colorado Tourism for developing Grand Lake Lodge over 100 years ago. Emery saw this beautiful home in a special location. In fact, he modeled his design on the magnificent lodges at Old Faithful and Glacier National Park lodges. He also created the “cross” folder. The package included a three-night hike through the Colorado Rockies at Grand Lake Lodge for a total of $27.

Once you understand the history of the lodge, you will feel like you have stepped back in time. Narrow streets leading to the cabins were built for Model T cars, two of which welcome visitors to the home. Our kids loved playing on the Model H fire truck and the car parked at the entrance to the lodge. In the center of the room is a large fireplace. The hotel itself is built of massive beams and has several beams inside and out. Colorado’s favorite backyard swings outside the lodge line offer spectacular views of the lake and the mountains beyond.
From the Huntington House Tavern to the Grand Lake Lodge, the view may be the best restaurant view in Colorado with the lakes and mountains outside the sliding windows.

The Huntington House Tavern is located in the hotel and has a great hotel feel. The restaurant is excellent. Ask for a table by the open window for an al fresco dining experience. Here you can find some of the best restaurant options in Colorado. The state has beautiful mountain and lake views, which is not an understatement.
Food meets environment. The menu varies and includes two courses for $49. Hot buns keep dinner going. The soft dough rolls were so delicious right out of the oven that our son started ordering more. Our first course selections include a lodge salad and a cheese and charcuterie board. We couldn’t go wrong with our meal choices of Jumbo Lump Crab Cakes and 10oz Marinated Grilled Seared Diver Scallops. My husband said he would make the two-hour drive just for that steak. Of course, there are also craft cocktails, wine and delicious desserts to complement your dining experience.
Deer pilaf is a great place to visit before or after a meal, or more importantly, at sunrise or sunset.
I would also recommend spending time after dinner on the deer deck or on the lawn below the lodge to catch the sunset over the water with the mountains in the distance. There is a steep half-mile trail from Deer Ward that leads to Big Lake Village and the lower lake area. If you’re up for a hike, it’s a short drive from town. We live in the mountains, but at a slightly lower elevation than Grand Lake Lodge’s 8,769 feet above sea level. We all know how quickly a steep hike can get windy.
