The National Brotherhood of Snowboarders (NBS) is a non-profit group representing black skaters, riders and snow sports enthusiasts. NBS is made up of dozens of clubs across the US – including the Slippers-N-Sliders Ski Club of Denver, Ski Noir 5280, the BIPOC Mountain Collective and the Ski Ambassadors of Colorado Springs. At a time when African-Americans were rare on the slopes and black ski clubs were the exception, founders Ben Finley and Art Clay met in 1972 and were steadfast in their vision to create a national black skier summit. A year later, the historic first Black Ski Summit was held in Aspen in 1973 and 350 skiers from across the country participated. With the 50th Anniversary Summit scheduled to take place in Vail, Colorado for the 2022/23 season, the general sense of camaraderie and camaraderie that permeated the event continues today. The goal of the NBS is “to identify, develop and support athletes of color who represent the United States in winning international and Olympic winter sports and to increase participation in winter sports.” Decades after bringing and empowering thousands of black snow sports enthusiasts across the country, the pioneering organization continues to drive positive change in the outdoor industry and change the perception of who belongs on the slopes.
