If the first thing that comes to mind when you hear the word “hostel” is a dimly lit room with a bunch of mattresses in a rundown downtown building, you’ve clearly never lived in Colorado.
Reasons Hostels Are An Amazing Lodging Alternative
Many of our top-rated (read: expensive) ski resort towns have a little-known secret: They’re home to some of the nicest, amenity-rich hostels you’ll ever visit. By our count, at least six new ones have opened in Colorado in the past three years, and the trend shows no sign of slowing. One of the biggest draws? publicly.
“I think every city that has hostels does it for the same reasons I do [as a traveler],” said Lori Roberts, executive director of the Salida Chamber of Commerce. The town is now home to two hostels – Simple Lodge and Hostel and the new Salida Hostel – and European travelers often call to inquire about them. “It’s almost invited as part of the culture to say, ‘Hey, where are you from?’ And I think this is very successful: you can meet people from all over the world.
Karen Carnuta, who just opened Salida Hostel in February 2016, says every aspect of the home, down to the appearance of the chairs, encourages conversation. There is no television and no music is played in the building. But there is a lot of room to be with fellow travelers.
“We get so many people who can afford the most luxurious places in town, but still live here [because of the community],” Carnuta said.
Hostels For Adventurous Stays In Colorado
The community aspect of hostels also inspired Pancho Batchelor to open the Mineshaft Inn in Rico, near Telluride, in 2013. He knew there was a need for affordable accommodation in the area and an empty Victorian home was perfect for him. Many of your guests make friends and help each other during their stay, such as carpooling to Telluride.
“It has to do with the backpacker lifestyle,” Batchelor says, adding that he believes more hostels will be coming soon. “I’d rather camp than be alone in an isolated hotel room.”

Book ahead: bivvy fills up quickly, and with good reason. As soon as you know you want to go, make a reservation.
The town of Rico may be small, but it’s full of late 1800s charm, and the Mine Shaft Inn is no exception. The hostel is tastefully decorated to match the Victorian architecture. Even better? There is a natural hot spring about half a mile from the hostel’s front door.
At the Bunhouse you can say goodbye to the fear of sleeping next to a snoring stranger. The new dorm beds are pods rather than bunk beds, reducing noise and keeping the heat out. You also get a free shuttle every morning to Vail or Beaver Creek.
Inns, Lodges & Bed & Breakfasts
Book early: A week or two in advance is enough, and there is often room for last-minute travelers days in advance.
Salida is now a two-college town, making Monarch Mountain, the Arkansas River and Chaffee County’s many hot springs more accessible than ever. Salida Hostel opened last year minutes from the city center and steps from the river and offers bunk rooms and four private rooms. For an additional $10 (free for private room guests), bunk room guests can enjoy a full breakfast.
Book early: Three to four weeks in advance if possible, but there is often room for hikers and last-minute travelers in bunk rooms.

The Bivvi Hostel
Book early: Owners appreciate as much notice as possible, but can often accommodate travelers with a few days’ notice.

The Super Queen is a private room with multiple beds. This is a great place for a couple, two friends who want separate beds, or a couple with their own tricycle.
