Fall brings colorful and cool weather for day trips, bike rides and hikes. Roaring Fork is the most elusive—and perhaps the most magical—of the valley’s seasons. Read on for some of our favorite home walks to capture the colorful views around our home, from a barely-there hike for everyone to a grand hour-long adventure for the most avid hiker.
For those looking for an easy hike close to town, the East Aspen Trail (complete with the East Aspen Extension if necessary) is a great option for spectacular views. Sights include the towering peaks of Independence Pass and the valley walls painted in green, red and yellow. Starting from the town, follow the route in front of Highway 82 for about a kilometer until the dirt road crosses the river. The road follows the Roaring Fork River for three miles until you reach a difficult campsite. If a six to eight mile round trip isn’t in the cards, riding to the start of Aspen’s East Extension and catching the last mile and a half to Zail is also a great option!

If a longer day on the road is needed, Hunter Creek Valley is a great option. Follow Smuggler Mountain Road, which offers stunning views of the city and Aspen Mountain, and takes you through dense stands of Aspen leading to the deserted Hunter Creek Timber Valley. You are welcome to hike here as much as you want, but remember to save energy for the descent.
One of the classic Castle Creek Valley hikes is this trail to American Lake. The start of the 3-mile, 2,000-foot climb is a winding through what may be the most beautiful aspen grove in the valley. After the collector (take the time to look) more coniferous environments await, up to the prairie and finally to an amazing American alpine lake. In the fall, there can be snow on nearby peaks, and temperatures at this higher elevation tend to be on the cooler side, so be sure to pack and layer up.
As one of the largest groves in the valley, Sunnyside is a popular spot for hikers and hikers. Aptly named, the trail lets the last light into the valley and makes for a beautiful afternoon hike with views of the Four Snow Gatherer Mountains and surrounding Fourteeners. Coming off the Rio Grande Trail or McClain Flats Road, the Sunnyside starts out at a fairly fast pace, but soon settles into a steady climb. After about five kilometers, you will be at the four-corner intersection, which marks where you should turn around, look at the view and enjoy the descent.
Hama to the village of Snowmas is a trip that every avid traveler should do at least once in his life. It passes through various ecosystems, including dense poplar forests, pine forests, wetlands, and open grasslands. Starting at Tiehack Road, you’ll end at Buttermilk, before crossing Owl Creek and taking the Government Trail into Snowmass, which will take you to Snowmass Canyon. Take the RFTA bus back to Aspen or have a friend drive you back to your car at Tiehack.

Surface: dirt track, ruins This can be one of the most amazing sights in the area; Capitol Peak juts out like a shark’s fin above Snowmass Valley and acts as a wall for the big hike to the lake. The 6.5-mile hike with about 2,200 feet of ascent and 900 feet of return is easily done in one day from the Capitol Creek Trailhead near Old Snowmass. A heavy 4×4 vehicle is essential to get there, but the walk through the brilliant aspens can be worth it in itself.
