Best Hikes Near Boulder
From the base of the Sangre de Cristo the Great Sand Dunes rise roughly. A scary place for nearby Native Americans, these sands are amazing. Star Dune is a huge place.
Distance: 3 miles Elevation Climb: 629 feet Difficulty: Hard Red Tape and Local Notes: This is not much of a trail as the hike is on steep, soft sand. This trail is easy for dogs, but dogs are not allowed beyond this point.
South Colony Lakes has a special place in my heart. Colorado’s most famous 14ers (14,000-foot peaks) Crestone Peak and Crestone Needle form a beautiful backdrop. Many people choose this bag because it is difficult for you to leave.
Distance: 8.9 miles Elevation: 2,286 feet Difficulty: Red to Medium Ridge Difficulty & Local Guidance: This road is mostly pedestrianized and requires a high clearance 4WD to reach the top of the road.

Local tip: The trail to the engine is closed every winter, so check conditions before setting off. Roads are generally snow-free from mid-June to mid-October.
