During my college years, I spent three summers working in Estes Park. I took full advantage of the great location and spent the day off on the road. If you are here to visit, I can assure you that the best place to visit Rocky Mountain National Park is Estes Park.
Grand Lake is known as the “Western Gateway” to Rocky Mountain National Park. It is located away from the main park attractions and hiking trails, making it more convenient and quieter than Estes Park.
The shores of the lake are lined with summer houses and simple cottages. A variety of year-round recreation is available, including boating and fishing in the summer and snowmobiling in the winter. Grand Lake is known as the capital of Colorado!

The Estes Park Resort
Rocky Mountain National Park is most popular during the summer months, so if you’re traveling between June and August, you should book your Rocky Mountain accommodation well in advance.
There are two main entrances to Rocky Mountain National Park near Estes Park: the Beaver Meadows Entrance and the Fall River Entrance. Both are close to Estes Park, but also to a great hiking area, the Bear Lake Trail. These two park entrances provide the fastest access to the Ridge Trail, a beautiful road that you must drive at least once when visiting Rocky Mountain National Park.
So if you’re visiting and want a great location that offers quick access to Rocky Mountain National Park, consider staying in the Fall River or Beaver Meadows area.
Rocky Mountain NP offers day or 7-day passes for short visits. However, if you visit several US national parks in a year, consider purchasing an annual national park pass. It’s a great choice for families, but also for people visiting multiple parks within 12 months.

Although it exudes a worldly style and has a beautiful design, some of the rooms could use a little updating and the customer reviews are not very good, so I’m not sure if this is the best choice in Estes Park. But if you’re looking for a hotel with history and charm, and if you’re lucky enough to get a room with a view – this might be one of the best places to stay in Estes Park!
While Estes Park is ideal for Rocky Mountain National Park vacations, accommodations here are popular and expensive. Another great place to visit in Rocky Mountain National Park is Grand Lake, on the other side of the park.
