Our tours vary in difficulty from moderate to intermediate to advanced, and the routes can be dirt roads, 4wd roads and/or singletrack. Be careful not to choose a tour that is too difficult for your skill level. Call our office if you have any questions.

Riders with limited mountain biking experience and good fitness, with an adventurous spirit may be suitable for intermediate tours. Note: Moderately difficult tours require more mountain biking experience due to the increased distance.

Sections of the road with long uphill and downhill slopes can be very difficult. Most of our advanced tours are at altitudes between 8,000 and 12,000 feet where road conditions can change rapidly due to weather and thunderstorms.

Singletrack Trails: The depth of singletrack trails creates technical challenges. If you are considering an intermediate or advanced singletrack trip, prior singletrack experience is essential.

The Arches will require more time to enter the park from April 1 to October 31, 2023. When I decided to drive to the North Fruita Trails – a favorite place in mountain biking for people in the Roaring Fork Valley – I saw a flyer posted on the newsstand. This was the BLM’s statement regarding updates to the Fruita Trails Master Plan.

It started with an announcement to add 30 miles of new single track in the coming years. It will almost double what is currently available to mountain bikers.

Underneath that statement was even bigger news: Class 1 e-pedal bikes are allowed on all local roads as of April 8.

New Fruita Trails Planned

When I started my journey, it was hard to imagine how much has changed since I first rode these 18 trails outside of Fruita, Colorado.

In the late 90s, a friend invited me to come there for a first day trip. We took a dusty wash north of town to a dirt car park below a place known as Bookcliffs.

I only remember three or four roads back then and the same number of cyclists. Many people were riding hard ropes. A complete set of suspensions cost several thousand rupees, which seemed more of a luxury than a necessity. Although bicycles still lacked front derailleurs, tubeless tires and droppers, the idea of ​​an e-bike was almost science fiction.

We walked a trail called Prime Cut, a precursor to purpose built trails. It was smooth, fast and delicious. It’s no wonder the street style has become so popular.

Another memorable route was the Chutes and Ladders. It was more technical, with an immediate descent into dry terrain followed by a short, hard anaerobic climb. If you don’t switch to granny gears in anticipation of the change, you can rip the derailleur or break the chain.

Joe’s Ridge was the highlight. This single track is against the backdrop of a hard desert plain, like any other rollercoaster we had in the Roaring Fork Valley at the time.

The camps were there then – everything was first, first. I have crazy ideas of going there on a Friday night to find a place for a group. Cars loaded with coolers, bicycles and firewood will run along the dusty road hoping to find one of the few spots. If you were late, you were usually out of luck.

A lot has changed since then. While the main parking lot is still dirt and the road a bleak washboard, the Route 18 area, or North Fruita Desert as it is now officially called, has become a big bike.

The trail system is being built every year, and the latest announcement of 30 kilometers ensures that it will continue.

Zippity Do Da is like Joe’s Ridge on steroids, and both trails go south. The Cruzy Western Zippity Trail is a fun trail to access both.

Vegetation and Down Uppity offer plenty of loop options to create grooves and stairwells. Pumps, Bumps and Rollers (PBR) is a crowd favorite similar to Prime Cut but with interesting features as the name suggests. It’s a great rush to get through the day. Be sure to keep canned PBR in the fridge for later on the road.

And the trail that started for me, Prime Cut, is marked as uphill only. As the road network gets busier, managers have learned the benefits of having lanes that help flow and reduce collisions. Prime Cut is the most fun non-dirty way to climb. Its central location within the road network allows easy access to everything.
