Plus, United has a direct flight from Austin to Denver, and then there’s a new Union bus from Denver to Breckenridge, so you don’t have to rent a car!

I was surprised at how cute the town of Breckenridge is – lots of restaurants and shops within walking distance, and the ski slopes are just a short drive away. Breckenridge is a mountain town nestled between Ten Mile Mountain and Colorado’s scenic Rocky Mountains. Originally the Victoria Mining District, it includes one of the largest National Historic Districts in the state, with 249 historic district buildings. We booked a United bus from the Denver airport to Breckenridge and did not have a rental car for this trip. We booked the United bus service when we booked the United ticket – an easy add-on. When we landed in Denver, our checked bags were automatically put on the bus that was waiting for us, and it was very convenient to take the bus to Breckenridge without having to rent a car and then drive two hours. In addition, the plane has wifi and toilets.

Breckenridge has approximately 250 historic buildings that provide the backdrop to the National Historic District listing. Most of the historic buildings here date back eight decades, from the settlement of Breckenridge in 1860 as a mining town to the end of the last mining operation in 1942.

Breckenridge Ski Area is the best place to ski and snowboard in Breckenridge. With five peaks and 2,900 acres, Breckenridge Ski Resort is one of the most popular ski resorts in Colorado. It is the first ski resort to allow skiers since Colorado hosted the World Ski Championships in 1986. Since then, it has become the best choice for skiing and freestyle skiing, and the terrain park has given riders a wonderful experience.

With 34 chairlifts and 187 runs for skiers of all experience levels, Breckenridge Ski Area has green, blue and black runs. The ski area opened this season with brand new lifts, so you can experience the open, rolling terrain of Peak 7 and cut a trail across the ski area’s wide summits.

High Street has over 200 shops and 80 restaurants – we love walking down the street! If you need a ride, there’s also a “Breck Free Ride” truck. Stop by the Welcome Center’s self-guided walking tour or sign up for one of the many history tours offered by the Breckenridge Visitor Center.

Taking a hot bath in a snowy environment is my favorite winter activity. We took a dip in the outdoor pool at the Marriott Breckenridge Residence Inn overlooking the Colorado Mountains, but Breckenridge has a variety of hot tubs to choose from.

Dog sledding starts in late November and early December. We wanted to go dog sledding but it wasn’t available in early November, but we will have to come back!

The Breckenridge International Snow Sculpting Championship (Monday, January 24, 2022 – Wednesday, February 2, 2022) is a world-renowned snow sculpture competition that brings together 12 teams from around the world on the Breckenridge Bridge, growing Carves snowballs by hand. Scales up to 20 tons and transforms complex works of art. Artists can bring their ideas to life using only hand tools, creativity and inspiration. Do not use power tools! The team spent countless hours (about 96 hours) sculpting over five days to create a temporary outdoor art gallery in downtown Breckenridge.

When most people think of activities to do in Breckenridge, skiing is the first thing that comes to mind. Part of Ten Mile Mountain, Peak 8 is the highlight of Breckenridge Ski Area, with plenty of options for terrain parkers and intermediate and advanced skiers.
