Like many Colorado towns, the area’s first inhabitants were the Ute Indians. The first Anglo-Americans who visited the area had no intention of building a town out of the Avon. They only hunt beavers for fur and sell them in town.
In 1845, the adventurer John Charles Frémont and his expedition traveled to the Eagle River to catch a “flounder”. With this discovery, they hoped to find some species in the river and decided to camp on the river bank named “William’s Fishery”.
It was in the early 1880s that the town started to become a community. George A. Townsend purchased 160 acres of land to build his home on Eagle River and Beaver Creek. Townsend decided to call this part of his property “Avondale”, but later changed it to Avon.
The first inhabitants of the town used agriculture as a source of income. They grew grass and raised cattle to feed the miners at Red Cliff. Metcalf and Oscar Trale of Homestead then prepared documents to claim the land under the Homestead Act.
