In this post I share some of the best things to do in Denver! You’ll never run out of fun things to do in Denver, but we’re focusing on a dozen worth your time in this mile-long city!

Denver is known as the Mile High city because it is 280 meters above sea level. It is also the capital of Colorado, as well as the most populous city in the state. We also learned that US News and World Report named it the best place to live in the United States.

We can see why it ranks well among other cities in the nation. Denver is a thriving metropolis with lots of open space and active lifestyle opportunities, a big city, a wide range of cultural activities and a great food scene (Top Chef Season 15 recently filmed here).

That said, Denver’s elevation makes it difficult for some. People with asthma and other medical conditions may not fare well here, and bakers have a terrible time getting their cakes to rise properly (it’s an art!).

We weren’t suffering from any serious illnesses and weren’t planning on cooking during our year-long trip around the world, so Denver was a great place to land and enjoy the outdoors and all the city has to offer.

Our home base during our stay in Denver was at the historic Brown Palace Hotel. The Brown Palace is Denver’s oldest continuously operating hotel, and they were celebrating their 125th anniversary when we were there. If you are wondering where to stay in Denver for the best access to many activities, Brown Palace is it!

We found the Brown Palace Hotel unique for several reasons. The exterior construction was very modern for its time, built of stone, in a flat or triangular shape. The facade has been preserved with an intricate entrance leading to the great foyer, with interior corridors, beautiful grills and arches, and unique lighting.

The Brown Palace Hotel also has several restaurants: Ship Tavern, Ellyingtons, Palace Arms, as well as two cocktail lounges. They offer afternoon tea (a true Brit will be impressed) and a Sunday Dom Perignon Champagne Brunch. We appreciate that the chefs strive to use local and sustainable ingredients while providing impressive dishes.

The Brown Palace’s location in the heart of the city makes it a great base for exploring Denver every day. Let’s take a look at some of the great things we do in Denver…
