Every Labor Day weekend, the skyline around Memorial Park is filled with hot air balloons. Formerly known as the Colorado Springs Classic, the Labor Day Lift Off is a festive, free three-day event with musical entertainment. The event, which has been running for almost 40 years, has seen amateurs and professionals launch technical hot air balloons into the sky – and you won’t want to miss the early morning balloon launches and the Saturday night ‘vein balloon’. Intrepid visitors can also book hot air balloon flights from one of the launch sites in the city.
The small, free admission Colorado Springs Pioneer Museum is a great place to learn about the city’s history. The former home of the El Paso County Courthouse, the approximately 60,000-piece collection and exhibit summarizes the history of the area through old photographs and artifacts.
The Native American collection is particularly strong, with hundreds of artifacts from the Ute, Cheyenne, and Arapaho nations.
