El Cuatro is perfect for a variety of activities if you’re looking for friends who want a solid night out. It can be booked as a private or joint dormitory. The El Cuatro room can accommodate up to four people and has enough space under the bed to carry a large package.

If the first thing that comes to mind when you hear the word “hostel” is a dimly lit room with lumpy mattresses in a drab building downtown, you’ve obviously never stayed in Colorado.
Here, many of our prized (read: expensive) ski resorts have little-known secrets: they’re home to some of the best service-packed hostels you’ll ever step into. By our count, at least six new ones have opened in Colorado in the past three years, and there are no signs of slowing down. One of the biggest draws? Community.
“I think every town that has hostels does, for the same reason I looked for hostels [as a traveler],” says Lori Roberts, executive director of the Salida Chamber of Commerce. The town is now home to two hostels, Rahisi Lodge and Hostel and the brand new Salida Hostel, and European travelers often call to inquire about them. “They almost invite you as part of the culture to say, ‘Hey, where are you from?’ and I think that’s the success of these: you get to meet people from all over the world.”

Karen Karnuta, who just opened Salida Hostel in February 2016, said every aspect of the house, down to the direction of the chairs, is meant to encourage conversation. There is no TV and no music is played in the building. But there is plenty of room to be with fellow travelers.
“A lot of our people can afford better places in the city, but they stay here [because of the community],” says Karnuta.
The inn’s community aspect also inspired Pancho Batchelor to open the Mineshaft Inn in Rico, near Telluride, in 2013. He knew there was a need for affordable housing in the area, and a vacant Victorian home seemed perfect. Many of your guests make friends and help each other during their stay, such as renting a car in Telluride.
“It has to do with that backpacker lifestyle,” Batchelor says, adding that he thinks more hostels are on the way. “I’d rather go camping than stay alone in a secluded hotel room.”

Breckenridge (co) Hotels
The town of Rico may be small, but it’s full of late 1800s charm, and the Mine Shaft Inn is no exception. This hostel is tastefully decorated to match the Victorian architecture. Best? There is a natural hot spring about half a mile from the hostel’s front door.
In the Bunkhouse, you can say goodbye to the fear of falling asleep next to snoring guests. The beds in the brand new hostel are more cases than beds, reducing noise and keeping you warm. Additionally, you can enjoy a free shuttle to Vail or Beaver Creek each morning.
Book early: A week or two should be enough, and there’s often room for last-minute travelers a few days in advance.
Salida is now a two-hostel town, making Monarch Mountain, the Arkansas River, and Chaffee County’s many hot springs more accessible than ever. Salida Hostel opened last year minutes from the city center and walking distance from the river and offers a dormitory and four private rooms. For an additional $10 (free for private room guests), dorm guests can get a full breakfast.
